IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BEDS AND FRAMES.
Specification forming,r part of Letters Patent No. 135,892, dated February 1.8, 1873.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLiAM Z. COOKE, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Beds and Frames therefor, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a plan or top view of the bed andframe. lFig. 2 is a side elevation of the same in the same position of adjustment as in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side view of the bed, legs omitted, in a different adjustment, the head being raised somewhat. Fig. 4 shows an alternative method of fastening together the diamond-shaped'figures ofwhich the wire-mattress is composed.
'lfhe letter a indicates the frame, in which a wire-mattress is suspended-a rectangular gether at 'the corners. To the frame a is hinged the adjusting-frame al, by means-of which the head of the bed can be raised or lowered, Within obvious and proper limits, as desired. The adjusting-frame may be fastened down by means of the hook b, which will take into the spring-catch c when the adj usting-frame is pushed down flat upon the frame. The hook b may be released from the hookc by a pull ward, and thus presses the hook inward. To the under side of the adjusting-frame al the pawl-frame a2' is hinged, from the sides of which project pins a3, which play in the racks a4, which are on the inside of the frame a; and these pins a3 may be made to catch and rest in the notches a5 c5, thus supporting the adj ustingframe at lthe point desired. A pull upon the cord cl will raise the pins out of the notches, and thus allow the adjusting-frame to fall. To the foot of the frame a are attached the C-springs e, and to the head of the adj usting-frame are fastened similar springs. These, obviously, might as well be fastened directly to therframe a if an adjusting-frame is not made use of. To these springs the wire-mattress is attached by means of the rings f. This mattress is composed of diamond-shaped and continuous, and at the other end .the ends of the wire arehooked and take into the ligure. just ahead. 4The side connections between the diamonds are composed of wire rings t'. In place of this they may be connected as shown in Fig. 4. The mattress is 'connected to the frame a, at or near the point where the adjusting-frame ishinged, by the S-springs s and the spring-connection h, which aid in giving tenA sion to the mattress when the adjusting-frame is raised. The ylegs k k and the headboard k compose the head-frame of the bed; the legs m m and the foot-board m compose the foot` frame. The legs are fastened to the frame a by two or more screws, n n.' On withdrawing all but n the head and foot framescan be folded down upon the frame a, thus putting the whole into a convenient shape for packing. In order to effect this the screw n must be put a little distance from the corner.
When the adjusting-frame is not used I put just under the mattress, upon both sides, the supporting-rail o, fastened to the frame a. at the ends by the spiral springs o o', which serve to steady and support the edges of the mattress.
I claim as my invention- The spring or Wire mattress g, in combina tion with the frames a and al, hook b, catch c, and cords c and d, substantially as and forthe purpose set forth.
2. The pawlframea2, pins a3, racks a, and notches af a?, combined with the frame a and mattress, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
3. The frames a al, combined with a spring'- mattress and rack, so that the spring-mattress will automatically be raised to an inclined position, substantially as and for the purpose i described.
4. The iigures g hooked together, as described, the springs e, and frames a al a2, alL constructed and arrangedfor operation, as and for the purpose herein specified. l
WILLIAM Z. COOKE.
