e it known that l, FREDERICK C. PAYNE, nflSl Canal st rect, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful lniproveinentin Bureau-Bedsteads; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference heilig had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

This invention relates to the construction of a bcdstead to fold up into the form of a bureau, whereby it is made to occupy but little space, and prevented from presenting an unsightly appearance in a room which is used as a sitting-room 5 and it consists in a certain novel construction of and mode of combining the parts ofthe bedstead, whereby the whole isenabled to fold up in the aforesaid form.

Figure l in the drawings is a front elevation of the hedstead folded up. l `ig.2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same from back to front. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical section of the bedstead in an unfolded condition. f

after the bedstead and mattress have been folded up, and this lid-piece B is made with a lug, e, at each front corner, to lap over the upper edge of the front hoard, l), for the purpose ofsecuring the latter in aV closed condition. These lugs also bear upon the upper ends of the legs b l), as shown in Figs. l and 2, and so secure the said legs close against the board l).

E F is a folding frame which constitutes the bed-bottom, divided at the middle of its length into two parts, whichare connected together by two pivoted strap-plates, G-one on each side-the said strap-platespermitting the folding of the frame, as shown in Fig. 3. Across this frame there are secured slats H H, which support the springs e e of a springinattress, and these'springs are connected in an y suitable in anner by straps ff, which may be upholstered over to complete the bed.

The part E ofthe frame E F, which forms the head of the bed, may have the head-board g permanently Vattached to it. lt is rxnl y secured to theinner side of the hoard D. lhe other part, F, is arranged torest upon the board D when the frame is unfolded and the said board is supported by the legs b b. lhe frontend of the said frame, which forms the foot of the bed, has hinged across it a standard, l1, which is capable of folding back under it or against its bottom, as shown in Fig. 3, but which, when unfolded, as shown in Fig. jfl, supports the said end of the frame upon the floor when the part F is in a horizontal posii tion. The slatted frame E F, thus supported at a,b,and 11,1nakes a very firm bed-bottom. The pivoted strapplates G, connecting the two parts of the said frame being pivoted to the said parts at point-s fi t', some distance from the abutting ends j j, permit the said frame to fold in such manner (shown in Fig. 3) as not to interfere with the folding ot' the mattress, l
