Description
No. 805,409. PATENTED NOV. 21, 1905. M. BROWN.
WINDOW FRAME.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 15, 1905.
MARIUS BROWN, OF NEW OOMERSTOWN, OHIO.
WINDOW-FRAME.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21, 1905.
Application filed May 15, 1905. Serial No. 260,491-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARIUS BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Oomerstown, in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window- Frames and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improved windowframe, made of metal, such as cast-iron, and adapted to be used in factories, shops, and in fireproof buildings; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
One object of my invention is to effect improvements in the construction of the win dow-frame whereby it is provided with devices to hold it in place in a wall.
A further object of my invention is to combine with the window-frame a sash which is pivotally mounted therein for vertical angular movement.
A further object of my invention is to provide improved means for holding the windowsashopen to any desired extent and to lock the same when closed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a window frame, sash, and sash-locking device embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail horizontal sectional view of the same, taken on the plane indicated by the line 3' 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is asimilar view taken on the plane indicated by the line 4 4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a detail front elevation showing a portion of the outer side of the frame and of the sash.
The frame 1 is made of metal, preferably of cast-iron, and constitutes a single casting. The sill-piece 2, top 3 and side pieces 4 of the frame are provided, respectively, with lateral flanges 5, 6, and 7, which extend from their inner sides at right angles to the face of the frame, which is flat. At the corners of the frame are outwardly-projecting ears 8, which are flush with the face thereof, and serve to hold the frame in place in the wall. The top 2 of the frame is here shown as curved or of arc shape. On the outer side of the frame, at the upper portion thereof, is an inwardly-proj ecting flange 9, which extends along the upper parts of the side portions 4 of the frame and across the top 3 thereof. The flanges 7 on the inner sides of the side portion 4 of the frame are formed at their centers with bearings 10, and the flange 5, which extends inwardly from the sill portion 2 of the frame, is formed with an inwardly-extendmg arm 11, which has a vertical stud 12 on its upper side. The window-sash 13 is also made of metal, preferably of cast-iron, and is a single casting. The same is shaped to correspond with the opening in the frame, is formed at its side with bearings 14, which register with the bearings 10 of the frame, and is formed at its outer sides with a flange 15, which extends along the bottom and upwardly on the lower portions of the sides thereof, the said flange 15 bearing against the outer side of the frame when the sash is in a closed position, the flange 9 of the upper portion of the frame bearing against the outer side of the sash when the latter is in such closed position. Pivot-bolts 16 in openings 160 in the bearings 10 14 serve to pivotally mount the sash in the frame.
The sash is formed on its rear side at its center with an eye 17, to which is loosely connected, as at 18, the upper or outer section 19 of a sash operating and locking bar 20, the latter comprising a section 21 in addition to the section 19 and hingedly connected thereto, as at 22. The section 19 has an opening 23 for the reception of the stud 12 in order to lock the sash in a closed position. The section 21 has openings 24 25 for the reception of the said stud in order to lock the sash in a partially-open or fully-open position. It will be understood that the bar in coaction with the arm 11 and stud 12 of the frame serves as means for opening and closing the sash and also for locking the same in a closed, partly-opened, or fully-opened position.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the inven tion will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
' Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The herein-described window comprising the metallic window-frame provided at the sill, top and sides, respectively, with the IIO lateral flanges 5, 6 and 7 which extend inwardly therefrom at right angles to the face thereof, said flanges 7 having the bearings 10 and said flanges 5 having the arm 11 provided with the stud 12, said frame being further provided at the corners With the outwardly-projecting ears 8 and being provided on its outer side, at the upper portion, with the inwardly-projecting flange 9; the sash in said frame being provided at its sides With the bearings 14 and formed at the lower portion, on the outer side, with the flange 15; the pivots engaging the bearings 10 and 14, and the locking-bar pivotally attached to the sash and having the opening for the reception of the stud 12.
nesses.
MARIUS BROWN.
