HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 15, 1913.
Application filed November 29, 1912. Serial No. 733,963.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. HESTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Clackamas and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in hinges, and has for its object to provide a hinge which is especially adapted for hanging window sashes, with a view to opening them inwardly and to permit the sash to be raised and swung over the window sill.
With these and other objects in view the hinge is constructed in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a sectional plan view showing a sash supported upon a hinge made according to my improved design. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of my improved hinge. Fig. 3 is a front elevation showing thehinge mounted and the sash with its member of the hinge at its upward limit and partially open.
Referring to the drawing in detail, 1 represents the vertical member of a sash frame and 2 is the window casing into which it is fitted. Against the inner face of the casing is secured what may be termed the fixed member 3 of the hinge, whose width, in this case, corresponds to the distance from the sash to the edge of the casing.
a is a pivot pin which unites the member 3 with the movable member 3 Upon the free edge of the member 3 is formed a right angularly disposed wing 3 adapted to fit against the inner face of the sash 1 to which it is secured in the usual manner.
At the upper and lower extremities of i the member 3 are formed knuckles 7 and 7 is formed on the last named member, a knuckle 9 leaving a space below the knuckle 8 equal to the height of the shoulder 8; and at the median portion of member 3 is formed a knuckle 10, which conforms to the knuckle 8 and shoulder 8 and between which and the knuckle 7 is a space equal to the height of the shoulder 8 The sash is adapted to fit the recdssed portion 5 of the stool 6, so that when it is closed the rain and wind will be excluded. This recess, it will be observed, will be formed slightly less than the height of the shoulder 8 and when the sash is lifted so as to bring the knuckles 9 and 10 against the knuckles 8 and 7, respectively, the hinge may be opened and the lower edge of the knuckle 10 will ride upon the upper edge of the shouldered portion 8 which will carry the sash clear of the window sill.
By mounting the sash upon a hinge constructed as above described, it may be readily opened inwardly affording great convenience in washing the window; and it allows the sash to swing in against the wall of the room, so that it will not form an obstruction when it is desired to have the window open. It will be understood that the hinge will be made in rights and lefts and that other immaterial variations will be made within the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a window sash of a hinge comprising a relatively fixed member having a knuckle formed on its front edge contiguous to each terminus and an intermediate knuckle, the upper part of which is broken away to form a vertical shoulder in its median line, and a movable member co-acting therewith and secured to said sash having a knuckle adapted to rest upon the lower knuckle 0f the fixed member and an intermediate knuckle conforming to that of the fixed member, whereby, when the members are in closed position, the shoulders will lock against each other, but which will permit the movable member to be raised so In testimony whereof I my signature that the intermediate knuckle of the fixed in presence of two Witnesses. member Will swing open and rest upon that VILLIAM J. HESTER. of the fixed member, whereby the sash may lVitnesses:
