Be it'known that I, WILLrA'M SHERBURNE, ot' Charlestowmin the county of Middlesex, and State'of Mas sachusetts, have invented certain new and, useful Improvements in Gil-Boxes for Journals of Axles forRai1road- Cars, cc.; and I do hereby declare the'followingto been. full, clear, and exact description of the s ame, reference being had to'the'accompanying drawings, makinga partiof this specification, in 'which- Figure 1 representsa longitudinal vertical section-ot' the oil-b`ox,"&c. My invention consists in inserting n bolt through the sides, and between the top of the" oil-box and the upper side of bearing, which,f rfor this purpose, is providedwitha groove, extending across thewholewidth of the bearing, and in securingA said bolt in its placein such a. manner that it cannot be thrownlout by the' con-A 'stant shocks andjoltings of the car. Thusthe bearing will` be kept firmly in its place onthe journal, and in the centre ofA the box, and'thereferc these parts are not subjected to disarra-ngcment and breakage, or to unne- ,ccssarywcnrg in consequence of the constant jolts, lateral shocks, concussione, andja'rs, to which railroad-axle boxes are exposed; thus they becomelmore secure, and do not require the constant cnreand attention which are necessary with other boxes. 4
My invention also consists in the manner in whieh'the box is made detachable from the jaw. The guides of the jaw, which fit4 snugly in' the oppositegr-oovcs o f the oil-box, have two recesses cut transversely into them.v These two recessesA and the intervening part of the guides correspond ,in height to two projections which form the grooves on the'box,.and into which, the guides t, and an =intervcningspaeeon the box where those projections are discontinued, so .that when. the box is put in position where-the cuts in the guides of the jaw come opposite to the grooves of the box, the lattcrcan be readily taken off, but when the oil-box is placed on the journal, and in working'condition, it will play ,between the'guide'suof the jaw in a vertical vdirection only. The sides of the jaw are provided with an ovalaperture, for the purpose ofgetting access to the bolt inthe box.
4T o enable others skilled to inake and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings` l i l On plate 1, figs; `1, 2, 4, 5, and 6,`A is tbejournal 4ci' the axle; B, the oil orjournal-box; D, the bearing on the upper part of journal A, and is provided with a'recess, extending across 'its width, `and into which the bolt E [its snugly. The sides of, the box Bhave projections a a', between and against which the bearing D is fitted; The partition F, ythe concave upper edge of which 4nearly touches the journal A, forms, with that part of the box between it and the lower edge of'hcad-plate G, the'oil-clinmber, which contains cotton-waste, tc., saturated with oil. The vlower edge of the opening for thc head-plate G is 'in the same horizontal plane 4with the lower portion ofthe concaveedge of'the partition F, and thus the o'verilow of the oil will be prevented whilc biling. The head-plato lGr is secured to the box B; an'd is packed with th'e leather, J, or'equivale'nts, and at 'the rear end of the box B, a. plate or ring, H, 'of hard wood, or other suitable material, fitted around the ax-le, isl playing'in the recess or chamber It, andthus allldust is prevented from entering the inside of the box;
The shape o f this .-pla'te ox-.ring I-I isiin conformity with that of the chamber c, and may beinserted'by leaving the lower side of the chamber open. The-bolt E, made of wrought iron'or other suitable material,'passes through the sides and projections a a of the oil-box, and being'on one end provided with a head, will allow the pin b, pressedforward by the spring c, to enter an aperture through the 'bolt'as soon as the head of the b olt strikes the box. The spring c and piu b eectually prevent the bolt-from being;4 thrown out. h z are thegrooves, into. which the guides 1,' of the jaw 'm fit. The operatin'for talkiugout the bearing is as follows: Prop the box'B, so as to counteract the pressurev of. the spring on top of box; then'pullthe pin b until it clears thebolt E; drawsad .b olt E from the box B, and remove the bearing D from the journal A'. All thiswill be -accomplished without 'disturbing' the rela.-
` tive positionof the jaw m, axle A, or box B. There is no canting. of the box B required, afsmust 4be done with other boxes; consequently the box can be fittedmore tightly between the guides'ofv the jaw, and the wea-r and l tear of these partsdiminished; also, a-port'ion of the'oilwill thus be saved, which unavoidably must be lost by the cauting ofthe box, and-tl1us the oil is allowed to come in closer contact with thcvjour'nal, and keep it` better-lubricated.
