IMPROVED JOURNAL-BOX.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 51,654, dated December 19, 1865.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, S. B. HIGGINS, of South Boston, county of Suifolk and State of M assachusetts, have invented a new-and useful Improvement in J ournal-Boxes 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable thoseskilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had at alltimes to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan or top view of the journalbox. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the line :0 .1, Fig.1.

It is found, in using journal-boxes as usually constructed, that when the box has been in use sufficiently long to become worn it has to be condemned and thrown aside,because the wearing occurring principally upon the end pieces projecting upward from the bottom of the box they soon become too much worn for use, and the entire journal-box has to be discarded.

My invention is designed to remedy this difficulty; and it consists in casting the end pieces separate from the rest of the box, so they can be replaced when they become too much worn for use.

. Ais the main body of the journaLbox. B are ribs which are cast on the inner surface of the journal-box to keep the Babbitt metal with which thejournal-box is filled or lined securely in place.

The body A of my improved journal-box is cast with a depression, groove, or channel along the end edges of its inner surface, said depression or channel having a square shoulder on the side toward the center of said box.

The end pieces, 0, are cast separate from the body Act the journal-box, and with an arm, D, projecting inward from the side of each end piece, 0.

The arm D must project from the side of the piece 0 at such a height from the bottom of said piece as will permit said-arm to extend along the inner surface of the box, as represented in the drawings. The arm should also be cast wider at its extremity, as represented, so that when the Babbitt metal shall be poured into thejournal-box the arm D shall be dovetailed into the body of the Babbitt metal and securely held therein. For additional security, and to hold the end pieces, 0, in position while the Babbitt metal is being supplied, the arm D maybe fastened to the bottom of thejournalbox by a small screw, as represented.

When a journal-box constructed in accordance with my improvement has become too much worn for use, the Babbitt metal can be readily melted out and the end pieces, 0, removed and their places supplied with new end pieces, the journal-boxes being thus made as good as new at a trifling expense.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by-Letters Patent, is-

A-journal-box with detachable end pieces, 0, constructed substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
