WILLIAM E. WILCOX, OFPEORIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSEL'F AND T; H WILLS, OF BEARDSTOWN, ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 91,804, dated June 22, 1869.
IMPROVED RAILWAY-CAR-AXLE BOX.
I The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the cam To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. WILCOX, of Fe oria, Peoria county, and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Anti-Friction Rollers for Gar-Axle Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be an exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in' which Figure 1 represents aside sectional elevation of the box, with itsanti-friction rollers in endless-chain form.
Figure 2 is a vertical section of the same.
Figure 3 shows the outside plate on the one side of the box, with its groove for packing.
Figure 4 shows the movable plate on the opposite side of the box.
The nature of my' invention consists in the construction ofthe anti-fiiction rollers in an endless-chain form, revolving on the upper side of the journal of the caraxle, with a concave box above the rollers, having a groove at each side for the links of the chain to work freely in, and an iron wedge above the concave box.
The object of my invention is to lessen the friction of the journals of car-axles, and prevent them from heating.
To euable others skilled in the alt to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation, as follows:
A representsa car-wheel, with its axle B operating in the oil-box 0.
Around the journal of the axle are the anti-friction rollers D D, working on the top of the journal B.
The rollers are attached to sectional side links E, two rollers on each link, and the journals of the rollers revolving loosely in each link.
Above the rollers is a concave circular box, F, rounding on the inside and square on the top, having grooves G, in the lower side, for the links E to play in, so as not to come in contact with the box, to cause fi'iction.
Above this inside box F, I insert a metallic wedgeplate, H, for the purpose of regulating the inside box F, so as to keep the journal B in its proper central position.
The diamond-shaped plate J, on the outside of the oil-box O, has'a bevel-groove, K, on its inside, in which Iput rope or other packing, so as to keep the oil in, I
and dirt out.
The plate L covers up the front of the oil-box G.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The construction of the anti-friction rollers D, operating in links E, that revolve in the grooves G- of the concave box F, with the wedge-plate H at top, when arranged and operating as herein described and for the purposes set forth.
W. E. vWILClOX.
