Description

No. 793,470. PATENTED JUNE 27, 1905. B. SOHIBLER, JR.
TOBACCO PIPE.
APPLICATION FILED 15110.31, 1904.
n MM/ Qw Em UNITED STATES Patented June 2'7, 1905.
PATENT OFFICE.
TOBACCO-PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 793,470, dated June 27, 1905.
Application filed December 31, 1904. Serial No. 239,110.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that -I, BERNHARDT SCHIBLER, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing in Paterson, Passaic county, New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object to provide a tobacco-pipe with a simple, inconspicuous, and effective means for clearing it of the mass of ashes and half-smoked tobacco which is left therein after use and which if attempted to be removed by striking the pipe against some rigid surface often leads to damage to the pipe, especially if made of meerschaum.
My invention will be found fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 illustrates a pipe with its bowl portion in section, so as to show the device of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the bowl portion of the pipe with said device in place therein. Fig. 3 illustrates a detail, and Fig. 4 shows a modified form of the invention.
In the'bowla of the pipe 6 I place a spiral 0, formed, say, of wire and preferably of such diameter as to snugly fit the bowl. The lower end portion cl of the spiral is straight and is in the spirals axis, being journaled in a hole e in the bottom of the bowl, through which it protrudes. Said end portion has a shoulder f, which abuts against the inside surface of the bowl, and at its protruding extremity, which is squared, as at y, it carries a knurl or milled finger-piece h, which may have a split hub 6, receiving the squared extremity of the portion cl of the spiral.
This means of attaching the knurl permits the spirals to be made and sold separately from the pipes, and to accommodate various sizes of pipes the spiral may have a radius a little larger than the radius of the average pipe-bowl, its inherent compressibility being relied on to make it fit bowls of the smaller sizes.
In Fig. 4: the spiral is shown as made of a spirally-wound strip of metal having its forward edge 1' sharp and set snugly against the inside surface of the pipe-bowl. This spiral is calculated to better clear away charred tobacco, which cakes up the surface of the bowl. In this figure is also shown a bushing 16, having its ends expanded to secure it in the bowl, as at Z, said bushing serving as a bearing for the spiral.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. The combination, with a tobacco-pipe, of a spiral for clearing out the bowl thereof arranged to rotate in said bowl with its axis 00- incident with that of the bowl, said spiral having an axial projection protruding through the bowl-bottom and forming a handle for rotating said spiral, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a tobacco-pipe, of a spiral for clearing out the bowl thereof arranged to rotate in said bowl with its axis coincident with that of the bowl, said spiral having an axial projection protruding through the bowl-bottom, and a finger-piece attached to the protruding end of said projection, sub stantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 16th day of November, 1904.
