ATTACHMENT FOB PIPES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 31, 1911.
Appflcationflled Kay 25, 1810. Serial No. 568,873.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, THOMAS Crmnnns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Pipes, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in attachments for smoking pipes and has for one of its objects the provision of a valve located in the stem of the pipe and arranged to open when smoke is drawn through the stem and thence to automatically close, whereby the assage of saliva into the bowl of the pipe Wlll be positively prevented.
.With these and other ob ects in view, which will more fully hereinafter appear, the present invention consists in certain novel details of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrate in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended c aims; it'bein understood that various changes in the orm, proportion, size, and minor details of the device may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit or'sacrificing any of-the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of the spec1fication:-Figure 1 is a longitudinal section taken through the portion of a pipestem showing my improved device in side elevation and app ied thereto. Fig.
2 is a detail perspective of the device. .Fig..
3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout.
The pipe stem is designated by the numoral 65 and the bore t ereof by the numera The device forming part of the subject matter of the present invention is shown to include a casing insertihle into the bore 6 of. the stem. One end portion of the casing is tubular as shown at 7, the said tubular portion terminating in a air of oppositely positioned arms 8 and 9, t e medial portions of said arms being bowed outwardly, as shown at 10 and at" their outer ends bear one u on'the other as. shown at 11. The cas-- ing t us formed is preferably of metal, the
which is fixed arms 8 and 9 being resilient, so that when the said casing is lnserted into the bore 6 the bowed portions 10 of said arms will bind on the wall of the bore, whereby accidental displacement of the casing will be prevented. The outer end of the bore of the tubular portion 7 is flared, as shown at 12, the said flared portion forming a valve seat.
.A substantially conical-shaped check valve is designated by the numeral 13 and is of a size to nicely fit'within the seat provided by the flared portion 12. Fixedly secured to the inner end ofthe valve 13 is one end of a helical retractile spring 14, the opposite end of said spring ending in an arm 15, p y secured to the outer ends of the sides 8 and 9.
The spring 1 1 is relatively weak and yieldingly holds the valve 13 in its seat,
but yields when the operator draws through the stem 5, thus permitting the smoke to pass from the bowl into the mouth of the operator, it being understood after the operator has ceased to draw the tension of the spring will restore the valve so that saliva passing through the outer end portion of the stem will be prevented from flowing into the bowl, whereby the latter will be maintained in a comparatively dry state.
From the foregoing, it is evident that I have provided a device which is comparatively simple in structure and inexpensive in manufacture, embodying few parts and these so arranged that the danger of derangement will be reduced to a minimum. I claim 1. In an attachment for smoking pipe stems, a valve casing provided with resilient arms to frictionally bmd on the wall of the bore of the pipe stem, and a valve arranged in the said casing.
2. In an attachment for smoking 1pc stems, a casing insertible into the bore 0 the pipe stem and having bowed slde members to frictionall bind on the wall of sald bore, said casing eing provided with a seat, a bodily movable valve, and means yieldingly holding said valve in said seat.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. THOMAS CHARLES. Witnesses I-Lmonn A. MILLAR, R. E. CHARLES.
