No. 791,442. PATENTED JUNE 6, 1905.

NAIL. APPLICATION FILED 1330.5, 1904.
- UNITED STATES Patented June 6, 1905.
PATENT OFFICE.
NAIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PaterzxtlYo. 791,442, dated June 6, 1905.
Application filed December 5, 1904. Serial No. 235,579.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE ANDERION, a
subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 49 Walkers Lane, Shelderslow, Saddleworth, in the county of York, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nails; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
' This invention relates to improvements in nails, and has for its object to combine a screw with a nail in such a way that the nail can be driven into the wood or other substance in the ordinary way and will hold or bite more securely than is the case with the ordinary nail now in use.
In carrying this invention into effect I make the nails of various sizes, gages, and material, suited-to different classes of work, and upon the lower portion of such nail I form a helical thread extending round or partly round the shank of the nail, or near the pointed end thereof. The upper part of the spiral or helical thread ends in a point or barb, while at elevation of a nail constructed according to my invention.
a is head of nail.
b is the shank. I
0 is the spiral or helical thread which extends round or partly round the lower end of the nailand terminates in a point or barbol.
As the nail is driven in in the ordinary way it will turn and cannot bewithdrawn, in the ordinary way of drawing nails, on account of the aforesaidbarb or point.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the United States of America,
1. As an article of manufacture, a nail pro-. vided with a helical thread on its shank a distance back from the end, the lower end of said thread being flush with the shank-surface but increasing in depth as it winds about said shank and terminating in a point or barb, substantially as described.
2. As an article of manufacture, a nail having a shank tapering at one end to a point and provided with a continuous helical thread extending a short distance up-the shank its convolution commencing substantially at the up per end of said tapered portion being flush with the surface at that point but increasing in depth as it winds about the shank and terminating in a point or barb, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
'GEORGE ANDERTON.
