Description

H. GALLAHAN. EAVES TROUGH FASTENER Patented Apr. 16, 1912.
IINITED TATE PATENT @FFIQE.
HENRY CALLAI-IAN, or DAYTON, oHIo.
EAVES-TROUGH FAST'ENER.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY CALLAHAN, a citizen of the United. States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eaves-Trough Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in hangers for eaves troughs.
In more specific terms the invention is an improvement of the device of the Berger and Askin patent of 1874, No. 149,184. The device of that patent shows a spike with a main penetrating point in line with the longitudinal axis of the spike, and a second point below said main penetrating point and on one side of the longitudinal axis thereof. The driving force is necessarily applied in line with the longitudinal axis of the spike. When the lower point of the spike engages the building, this force which is thus being applied in line with the longitudinal axis, meets with a lateral resistance.
It is the object of the present invent-ion to provide a spike in which the driving force, while being applied, is always in line with the travel of the spike, and meets with no side resistance until arrested by a stop which limits the amount of penetration of the spike.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view showing an eaves trough supported by means of my improved hanger. Figs. 2 and 3 are detached views of the hanger. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the hanger showing the same with a wire nail point.
In the specification and drawings similar reference characters indicate the same parts.
1 designates the hanger. It is preferably Specification of Letters Patent.

made of malleable iron with a point 2 which may be constructed in any of the forms shown. In Fig. 2 the penetrating end is tapered at a right angle to the taper given said end in Fig. 3, so that the widest portion of said end may, in either case, be driven into the wood at a right angle to the grain, thus avoiding splitting the wood. At a suitable distance from the point a pro jection 3 is located which acts as a stop to the penetration of the hanger when driven and as a clamp to hold the inner side of the trough 4 firmly against the eavesboard. The out end of the hanger is formed with a driving head 5. The said head extends in the form of a hook 6 which receives the outer roll or bead 7 of the trough and securely holds the same. The distance of the stop 8 from the head 5 is equal to the width of the trough so that when the hanger is driven in to the stop, the hook 6 will have engaged the beaded edge of the trough, after which the end of the hook is pressed upwardly to tighten the grip.
The device is driven through the inner side of the trough, with the headed end resting 011 the trough.
Having described my invention, I claim:
The combination with an eaves trough, of a trough-hanger having an end driven through the inner side of the trough into the adjacent side of the building to support the inner portion of said trough, the outer end of said hanger having a driving head in line with the penetrating end of the hanger, and a hook which incloses the outer side edge of the trough and supports the outer portion of said trough, and a stop in the body of said hanger adapted to limit the penetration of the hanger and to clamp the inner side of the trough to the building.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY CALLAHAN.
