BAG-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 791,379, dated May 30, 1905. Application filed August 10, 1904:- Serial No. 220,217.

at Pearl City, in the county of Stephenson andv State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Holders, of

which the following is a specification.

This'invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in bag-holders; and it has for its object to provide means for holding the mouth of the bag in a distended position until filled and then for conveniently releasing it from the holder to permit the end of the bag to be closed. Y

Generically, my invention includes a stand having a vertical supporting member to which the bag-holder member is adjustably secured, and the said bag-holder in its generic nature includes a pair of laterally movable arms adapted to be received by the bag-neck and means for either extending or drawing together said arms and maintaining them in such extended or drawn-together position.

With other objects in view, which will be hereinafter apparent, the invention includes certain novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all of which will be first described in detail and then be specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanyingdraw-' ings, in hich Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention as applied for use. Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof, the bag being broken away. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. iis a horizontal section on the line't 4 of Fig.2.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all of the figures, the support or standard 1 is mounted upon a base 2, to which the receiving-platform 3 is secured, and the said support is suitably braced by brace-rods 4 4, as shown.

the front leg 6 of which has a vertical slot 6 while the rear leg 6 has an inwardlycurved portion or bend 6 The cross-arm 7, fixedly secured to the lower end of the arms 9 9, which may be of a U shape in horizontal section or may be circular in form, if desired, depending upon the nature of the opening desired in the bag end, and the said arms 9 9 may be provided with pins 10 10 for engaging the bag, if found desirable.

12 designates a second link member, one end of which, 12, is pivotally joined with the other arm 9 at its end 9", and at its other end, 12 the link 11 is pivotally joined to the lever member 11', where the handle portion 11 and the link portion'll are connected, and the said pivotal connection 13 for the links 11 and 12 also passes through the slots 6 and is movable vertically therein.

14 designates a bolt which passes through the rear leg 6 near its top'and through the slot 1 of the support 1 to receive a wing-nut 14:, whereby the bracket 6 can be adjusted up and down with respect to the support 1. The bracket 6 also has a projection or leg 6", which enters the slot 1 to prevent turning of the bracket on the axial line of the bolt 14 during the bag opening and closing action.

The links 11 and 12 are so shaped that when the parts are in position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 they will lie in a vertical plane As an auxiliary means for locking the parts 6 of the U-shaped bracket 6 with a rack portion 6 with which the pawl 11, fulcrumed on the link portion 11 cooperates, as clearly shownin the drawings.

So far as described the operation of my invention will be best explained as follows: The operator raises the handle-lever to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and then places the neck of the bag around the arms 9 9, after which he lowers the handlever until the parts are in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2, when the arms 9 9 will be distended and firmly hold the bag with the mouth open. The pivot-bolt which slides in the vertical slot of the bracket will be forced down to the extreme lower portion of the said slot, and by reason of the peculiar shape of the link members the arms 9 9 will be held to their extended position regardless of the pressure applied thereto at their ends, since any force applied to the end of the arms 9 9 to close them together will only serve to tend to force the pivotbolt, which moves up and down in the slot of the bracket, to its lowermost position. When smaller bags are used, the parts will be locked in their bagopening position by the rack and pawl devices 6 11, before referred to.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that I provide a very simple and effective construction of bag-holding means which will readily and effectively serve its intended purposes. As soon as the bag has become filled it is only necessary to again raise the hand-lever to the position shown in dottedlines in Fig. 2, when the bag will be released.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought the advantages, construction, and complete operation of my invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it appertains, and I desire it understood that slight changes in the detailed arrangment of parts may be made without departing from the invention or the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A device of the character stated, comprising in combination with a base, a platform and a standard secured thereto, of a bag-holding and mouth-extending mechanism vertically adjustably held upon said standard and including a U -shaped bracket, a laterally-extended guide member secured to said U-shaped bracket, bag-engaging arms held in said laterally-extending guide means for expanding and contracting the arms laterally with respect to each other.

2. A device of the character stated, comprising in combination witha base, a platform and a standard secured thereto, of a bag-holding and mouth-extending mechanism vertically adjustably held upon said standard and including a U-shaped bracket, a laterally-extending guide member secured to said U- shaped bracket, bag-engaging arms held in said laterally-extending guide, means for expanding or contracting the arms laterally with respect to each other, said means including a lever member pivotally secured at one end to one of said arms, and a link member pivotally secured at one end to the other arm and at its other end to the lever member.

A device of the character stated, com prising in combination with a base, a platform and a standard secured thereto, of a bag-holding and mouth-extending mechanism vertically adjustably held upon said standard and including a U-shaped bracket, a laterally-extending guide member secured to said U shaped bracket, bag-engaging arms held in said laterally-extending guide means for extending or contracting the arms laterally with respect to each other, said means including a lever member and a link member, the lever member being pivotally secured at one end to one of said bag-engaging arms, said link memher being pivotally secured at one end to the other bag-engaging arm, and said link member and said lever member being pivotally sccured to each other and to the U shaped bracket, substantially as shown.

A device of the character stated, com prising in combination with a base, a platform and a standard secured thereto, of a bag-holding and mouth-extending mechanism vertically adjustably held upon said standard and including a U-shaped bracket, a laterally-extending guide member secured to said U- shaped bracket, bag-engaging arms held in said laterally-extending guide, means for extending and contracting the arms laterally with respect to each other, said means includinga lever member and a link member the lever member being pivotally secured at one end to one of said bag-engaging arms, said link member being pivotally secured at one end to the other bag-engaging arms, and said link member and said lever member being pivotally secured to each other and to the bracket member, said pivotal connection of the link and lever members passing through and being vertically movable in a slot in the bracket member, substantially as shown and for the purposes specified.

A device of the character stated, comprising in combination with a base, a platform and a standard secured thereto, said standard being vertically slotted near its upper end, a bagholding mechanism comprising a U-shapcd bracket, a bolt passing through said U-shaped bracket and said slotted portion of the standard, a wing-nut cooperating with said bolt to hold said U-shaped bracket to said standard, said U-shaped bracket including a transverse bearing-arm having rings at each end, said bracket member also including a verticallyslotted portion, a pair of bag-engaging arms cooperating with said transverse portion of the bracket member and passing through the transverse bracket member rings, a curved link pivotally secured at one end to one of said bag-engaging arms, a lever member including a curved link portion pivotally secured at one end to the other bag-engaging arm, a pivot-bolt passing through said slotted portion of the bracket member through said lever member and the other end of the firstmentioned link member to pivotally join the link and lever members with each other and with the bracket portion, said bag-engaging arms, said lever and said link members being so arranged that when the lever member is forced downward the bag-engaging arms will be extended, and the pivot bolt passing through the link, the lever and the slotted portion of the bracket will be forced to its lowermost position to lock'the, members in their bag-engaging arm-extended position, substantially as shown and described.

A device of the character stated, comprising in combination with a base, a platform and a standard secured thereto, of a bag-holding and mouth-extending mechanism vertically adjustably held upon said standard and including a U-shaped bracket, a laterally-extending guide member secured to said U- shaped bracket, bag-engaging arms held in said laterally-extending guide, means for ex tending or contracting the arms laterally with respect to each other, said means including a lever member and a link member, the lever member being pivotally secured at one end to one of said bag-engaging arms, said link member being pivotally secured atone end to the other bag-engaging arm, and said link member and said lever member being pivotally secured to each other and to the bracket member, means for locking said bag-engaging arms to their extended position.

A device of the character stated, comprising in combination with a base, a platform and a standard secured thereto, of a bag-holding and mouth-extending mechanism vertically adjustably held upon said standard and including a U-shaped bracket, a laterally-extending guide member secured to said U- shaped bracket, bag-engaging arms held in said laterally extending guide, means for expanding or contracting the arms laterally with respect to each other, said means including a lever member pivotally secured at one end to one of said arms, and a link member pivotally secured at one end to the other arm and at its other end to the lever member, means for locking said bag-engaging arms to their extended position. I

A device of the character stated, comprising in combination with a base, a platform and a standard secured thereto, of a bag-holding mechanism vertically adjustably held upon said standard and including a U shaped bracket, a laterally-extending guide member secured to said U-shaped bracket, bag-engaging arms held in said laterally-extending guide member, means for extending and contracting the arms laterally with respect to each other, said means comprising a lever member and a link member, the lever member being pivotally secured at one end to one of said bag-engaging arms, said link member being pivotally secured at one end to the other bagengaging arm, the said link member and said lever member being pivotally secured to each other and to the bracket member, said bracket member having'a rack portion, a pawl secured to the lever member for engaging with said rack portion to lock the bag-engaging arms to their extended positions substantially as shown and for the purposes described.
