Description
R.' RAMSEY.
Bag Holder.v
Patented Feb. 21, 1865.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
ROBERT RAMSEY, OF NEV WILMINGTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 46,498, dated February 21, 1865.
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT RAMSEY, of New Wilmington, in the county of Lawrence and State ot Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bag-Holders and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 is a plan ot' a bag-holder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is afront elevation 0f the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts in the two figures.
Thenature ofmy saidinvention consists, trst, in formingthe metallicopening arms orspreaders in one piece with the spring by which they are expanded; secondly,in anovel combination -ot' devices whereby the vertical adjustment ofthe spreaders and suspending-hooks is efiected.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand and use the same, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, A A' represent thc arms or spreaders, whichhold the bag in an open condition while the grain is being poured in in customary manner.
A2 represents a spring or an elastic part, which is formed in one piece with the arms A A', and adapts them to be contracted or drawn together in order that they may be readily admitted into the mouth of a bag, and then expand or open out or the purpose of holding the bag open. The arm A works through a loop, e', on the arm A', and its extremity is hooked, as shown at a, to prevent the two arms from separating. By thus forming the expanding spring in one piece with the spreaders the implement is rendered more effectual and durable, and its cost is reduced.
B is a standard, having a vertical slot, B, through which passes the screw-bolt O, whereby the spreaders A A', with the spring A2,
may be adj usted vertically to conform to the length of bags ot' various sizes, said bags being designed to rest upon the pedestal I) while being filled. v
E is a lever orhandle conjoined to a nut, E', which works upon the screw-bolt O, and enables a' ready adjustment ot the spreaders while being employed to hold the spring A2 against the standard B, for the purpose of retaining the arms A A' in a horizontal position. The screw-bolt C also sustains and adjusts a plate, F, upon vwhich are formed hooks ff, upon which the bags may be supported at one side; hence it will be seen that the screw-bolt() admits of the simultaneous adjustment of the spreaders A A' and hooks f f.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. Forming the expanding spring; A2 in one piece otmetal with the spreaders A A', substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The screw-bolt O -and nut E, employed in combination with the spreaders A A' and hooks ff, in the manner and for the objects herein stated.
