CUTTING-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 790,695, dated May 23, 1905. Application filed Tune '7, 1904:. Serial No. 211.525.
[0 all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS MASON LILLARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charlotte, in the county of Mecklenburg and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cutting-Tables, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cutting-tables, and refers particularly to a table for use in cutting the bottoms of trousers.
At present it is the general and common practice to cut the lower ends'or bottoms of trousers by means of shears, and this has been found objectionable, for the reason that it requires the expenditure of considerable time and labor. I Frequently one leg is made longer or shorter than the other, as the proper distance from the crotch and inseam to the lower edge of the trousers is not properly measured,
and it is a very difficult matter to secure the trousers in the proper position to insure the bottoms being properly cut and shaped.
With this objection in view the main object of my invention is the provision of a table and means of inexpensive, durable, and practical construction capable of operation by any person of ordinaryintelligence which will properly secure the trousers and cutthe proper amount of material from both legs of the trousers at a single cut and absolutely and positively insure cutting the bottoms from each leg at exactly the same measurement.
To attain the desired object, my invention consists of a cutting-table and cutting and measuring devices carried thereby embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts for service, substantially as disclosed herein.
In order that the detailed construction of my improvements and the operation may be fully understood-and the advantages be appreciated, I invite attention to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a cutting-table and mechanism constructed in accordance with and embodying my invention.
Figure 1 represents a top plan View of my improvements with a pair of trousers shown in dotted lines in the position they occupy When the lower ends or bottoms are being cut.
line 6 6 of Fig. 4:.
Referring by numerals to the drawings, in which simllar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views of the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the platform or table proper, which is of the proper size and shape for the desired purpose and at one end is supported on legs 2, suitably secured by brackets or braces 3, and at the other end is mounted on the single leg 4, provided with the supporting-base 5, and at its upper end at the rear-portion is provided with the bearing lugs or ears 6 and upon its face carries the bed-plate 7, which is preferably made of metal, such as brass, and acts in conjunction with the knife or cutter. In said ears or lugs formed on the table is pivoted at 8 one end of the lever 9, the other end thereof being formed with the curve orwave 10 and provided with the similar-shaped seat or recess 11 toreceive the knife or cutter 12, said knife or cutter being rigidly secured by proper fastenings '13. From this construction it will be seen that the lever ispivoted'to thetable and that it carries a knife or cutter of the proper shape or the desired shape necessary for the bottom of the trousers and that said knife coacts with the metal bed-plate. Intermediate of the said lever is pivoted at 14 the upper end of the vertical rod 15, connected near its lower end by the plate 16 with the table at 17 said vertical arm or rod being provided with a lower angle or bent end 18, to which is connected the turnbuckle or double adjustable screw connection 19, whose upper end is connected with the series of levers or lazy-tong connection 20, and to the inner upper end of one of the three levers forming said connection is connected the upper end 21 of the rod 22, whose lower end is connected at 23 with the treadle or foot-lever 24:. The treadle or oted at its upper end 31 to the table, this con-' struction forming a means for returning the parts to normal position, also for taking up wear and adjusting the tension of the spring.
To the inner edge of the table is secured the tubular brackets 32, in which fits the rod 33, upon which is mounted,by means of sleeves 34, the angular measuring device or square 35, which is adapted to engage on the inner side at the crotch of the trousers to secure the trousers at the proper adjustment or length, which is determined by the scale 36, secured near the opposite side of the table, and said measuring device is retained at the proper adjustment by means of the sliding and adjustable sleeve 37.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the operation of my invention will be readily understood, and I would state that the trousers are placed upon the table in the position shown in dotted lines, the measuring device having been placed at the proper point to obtain the desired length of the inseam, and the measuring device retains the legs of the trousers flat and in exactly the proper position, the bottoms or lower end of the trousers extending over the bedplate, and it is then simply necessary to press the treadle or foot-lever down and the knife with a single shear cut removes from both legs of the trousers the exact amount of material and of the determined length for each leg. It will thus be understood that it is absolutely impossible to make an improper cut of the bottom of the trousers, as the machine will positively at a single cut remove the proper amount of material, also that the machine will save much time and expense, and by reason of its simplicity and inexpensiveness of construction, its ease and efliciency of operation, and by reason of the great saving insured by its use the machine will commend itself as useful, desirable, and practical.
I claim 1. In a cutting-table, the combination with the table proper, of the longitudinal scale arranged near one edge of the table, the rod secured on the opposite longitudinal edge of the table, the measuring device having the sleeves at one edge fitting adjustably on said rod and having its opposite end adapted to register with the scale, the sleeve on said rod for securing the measure in the proper adjusted position, the lever pivoted to one end of the table and formed with the curved end, the curved knife secured in said curved end, the vertical bar having its upper end connected to the lever, the adjusting mechanism connected to the lower end of said vertical bar, the series of links connecting the adjusting mechanism with the end of the table and the spring foot-treadle connected with the series of links for operating the knife.
2. In a cutting-table, the combination with the table proper, of the longitudinal scale arranged near one edge of the table, the measuring device having the sleeves at one edge fitting adjustably on said rod and having its opposite end adapted to register with the scale, the sleeve on said rod for securing the measure in the proper adjusted position, the lever pivoted to one end of the table and formed with a curved end, the curved knife secured in said curved end, the vertical bar having its upper end connected to the lever and having its lower end formed with a foot or bend, the link connecting the vertical lever with the end of the table, the adjusting mechanism connected to the lower end of the vertical bar and consisting of the pair of screws and the adjustingsleeve, the series of links connecting the adjusting mechanism with the end of the table, the foot-treadle, the adjustable spring connection between the table and treadle, and the rod connecting the treadle with the series of links.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
