Description
J. -L. M ONT'EJO.
CIGAR-MAKERS BOARDS.
Patented March 14:, 1876.
PATENT OFFICE.
JUAN L. MONTEJO, OF PHILADELPHIA PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF HIS RIGHT TO MIGUEL A. MONTEJO, 0F SAME PLACE.
IMP ROVEMENT. tN CIGAR-MAKERS BOARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent'No. 174,836, dated March 14, 1876; application filed January 26, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JUAN L. MONTEJO, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful I mprovement in Cigar- Makers Boardsyand I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such'as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to. the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure is a perspective of my invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the reverse side of my invention. Fig. 3 is anend view.
The object of my invention is to provide a board for cigar-makers use which may be worked upon with greater facility and less weariness to the operator than the common board. A further object of my invention'is to combine with the board a gage and knife, so that after the cigar has been rolled it can -be easily and expeditiously cut to the right length.
My invention accordingly consists of a hinged board, sustained on springs, so as to render it yielding and elastic. It consists, further, in the combination, with suchboard, of a gage and cutter. for the purpose above indicated.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A and A represent sections, hinged at a. B B are springs, fastened at b to the section A. O (J are flexible straps, fastened at c 0 t0 the edges of the sections A and A, limiting the upward movement of the latter on its hinges. D represents a blade, having a cutting-edge, d, and fastened by screws d to the basesection A. D is another blade, having a curved cutting-edge, (I, said blade being fastened to the moving section A at 01 E represents a graduated plate let into the section A on its upper surface, and F a slotted plate fastened to or inserted in the edge of said section. G is a sliding finger, fastened by a thumb-screw, g, to the said plate F, the slot f, in which said screw enters, permitting the finger to be adjusted on the plate E. H is a cup for receiving the paste or gum used on the wrappers of the cigars.
Theoperation is as follows: The gagefinger G being adjusted with reference to the blade D D, according to the length of cigar to be made, the operator sits at the board, with the hinged edge nearest him. The filler and wrapper are manipulated in the usual manner with reference to the rolling and-preliminary cutting of the latter. When the cigar has been duly rolled, the tip or pointed end is placed against the finger Gr, the other or blunt end passing between the blades D D, as shown in the drawing. A quick depression of the section A is then made by the operator, instantly cutting off the cigar to the required length.
It will be found that the yielding-surface board A will lessen the labor of the operator, and avoid the shoulder-pain to which cigarniakers are invariably subject toward the close of a days work. v
The boards A A have been described as hinged together. This, however, it may be remarked, is not absolutely necessary or essential, as if the upper board is held in proper relation to the springs by any other means than hinges, and permitted to yield, the result will be the same.
What I claim as my invention isp 1. A cigar-makers board rendered yielding and elastic, so as to give and return under the operators touch in rolling or cutting, as set forth.
2. A cigar-makers board formed in two sections, A A, hinged at a, and provided with interposed springs B, substantially as set forth.
3. The section A, sustained upon springs B, attached to or resting upon a suitable base, substantially as shown and described.
4. In combination with a cigar makers board, a knife for cutting off the ends of the cigars, attached to and operated by the movement of the board, substantially as shown and described. v
5. The combination of thehinged springboard A, board A, cutters D D, and gage E F G, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set 'my hand this 19th day of January, 1876.
JUAN LUI$ MONTEJO. Witnesses '1. A. UONNOLLY, CHAS. F. VAN HORN.
