TOBACCO-CUTTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,053, dated January 20, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it knownthat I, T. HENRY ASBURY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Tobacco-Cutting Machines, of which the following is a specification.

The main object of my invention is to utilize the frame of a tobacco-cutting machine as a support for a device for cutting off the tips of cigars, and this object I attain by the combinations of parts fully described and claimed hereinafter.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, Sheet 1, is a perspective view of a tobaccocutting machine with the attachment which forms the subject of my invention; Fig. 2, Sheet 2, a perspective view of the attachment combined with a match receptacle and re moved from the frame of the tobaccocutl'ing machine; Fig. 3, a vertical section on the line 1 2, Fig. 2; Fig. 4, avertical section on the line 3 4:, Fig. 2; and Fig. 5, a sectional plan on the line 5 6, Fig. 4.

It will not be necessary to describe minutely the construction and operation of the tobaccocutting machine further than to remark that its frame A may be similar to that shown in the machine for which Letters Patent No. 162,007 were granted April 13, 1875. To this frame A,I secure the attachment shown in Fig.1,which consists, mainly, of a casting, B, with mechanism for cutting off the tip ends of cigars.

In Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5 the casting consists of two parts, A and B, made in one piece, the former having the receptacle 1:), for matches or cigar-lighters, the part B consisting of the opposite sides,a a, top I), and cross piece d, the sides being made to conform with and to fit snugly to the edge of the frame A of the cutting-machine, and the top I) having a flange, t, with openings for receiving setscrews, by which the entire casting is secured to the said frame A. There is an opening, f, in front of the part B of the casting, and the edge of this opening is recessed for the reception of the fixed cutting-blade e, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, the rear cutting-blade, h, being forced against the said fixed blade by a spring, n,which, in the present instance, has two elastic fingers and is secured to the under side of the top plate, I). tached to a head, D, between which and the top b of the casting intervenes a spiral spring, E. The upward movement of the blade h and its head is restricted by a screw, m, passing through the cross-piece cl, and extending into an elongated slot in the blade. In each cutting-blade there are circular openings of different sizes-three in the present instancethe edges of these openings being so beveled as to present comparatively sharp cutting-edges at those faces of the two blades which are in contact with each other. \Vhen no pressure is applied to the head D, the series of openings in one blade coincide with the series in the other blade, so that the tip end of a cigar may be introduced into any openings of the series, and this tip will be sheared off on depressing the blade h. Both cutting-blades are held in place by the spring a, which confines the fixed blade to its recess in the casting and forces the movable blade against the fixed blade, so that a proper shearing effect maybe produced by the combination of the two blades.

It is not essential that the match-receptacle should form a part of the attachment, which may comprise the cutting portion only, as shown in Fig. l.

I claim as my invention 1. The casting B, constructed for attachment to the frame A of a tobacco-cutting machine, in combination with a perforated fixed blade fitted to the casti ng, a movableperforated blade, h, a spring acting thereon, and devices, substantially as described, by which the said blade h may be operated, as set forth.

2. The combination of the casting B,adapted to the frame of the tobacco-cutting machine, the perforated blade e,adapted to the recessed edge of an opening, f, in said casting, the perforated blade h, and its head D, the spring n, and a spring, E, interposed between the said head D and the casting, all substantially as described.
