JEAN ALFRED LEU, OF MONTREAL` CANADA, ASSIGNOR .OF ONE-HALF TO NUMA HUGUENIN, OF MONTREAL, CANADA.
BOTTLE SUPPORT AND PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 784,868, dated March 14, 1905.
Application lcd June 9,1904. Serial No. 211,763.
To all 1077/0711/ it 'n1/ty con/cern:
Be it known that LJ'EAN ALFRED LEU, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing' in the city and district of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec, Canada, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle Supports and Protectors; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable IO others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in bottle-supports and protecting` means cooperating therewith whereby a bot- I5 tle may be supported in position while extracting the cork or stopper and be so protected 'or inclosed as to guard against injury to 'the person extracting the cork therefrom.
The object of the invention is to provide a 2O device of the character described which may he connected with a counter or bar and be supported in position in proximity to the cork-extracting device commonly used in barrooms, Sac., all as hereinafter fully described,
and specifically pointed out in the claim.
The annexed drawing represents a fragment of a bar or counter with my device supported in position thereupon with a portion of the device shown in vertical section for convenience of illustration.
Referring to the parts, 1 indicates the counter to which may be connected the corkextractor 2, provided with the usual operatinghandle 3 and corkscrew spiral 4. Connected with the under side of the bar is a supportingplate 5, which is preferably bifurcated at its outer end, and between the bifurcations of this plate is pivotally supported a rod or standard 6, the pivot 7 therefor extending transversely through the plate 5. The lower end of the rod 6 is provided with an enlargement or offset 8, which serves as a stop to prevent accidental displacement of the bracket slidable thereupon,
which is hereinafter more fullydescribed.r
Slidable longitudinally of the rod 6 is a bracket 9, having at its inner end the sleeve 10, which is slidable upon the rod 6, while set-screws 11 project through such sleeve and are adapted to bear against the face of the rod 6 to lock the bracket in any desired position longitudinally of the rod. rlhe outer end of the bracket 9 is perforated, as shown, and projecting through the perforation is a stem 12, which 4connects with the bracket the plate 13 and to such plate the cup-shaped bottle-receptacle 14. 5 5 For convenience of operation it is preferred that the plate 13 and receptacle 14 be rotatable upon the bracket 9, and the receptacle 14 is formed of sufficient size to permit inserting therein bottles such as are ordinarily used for O containing liquids, &c. For convenience the receptacle 14 is preferably frusto-conical in shape and may be of any suitable material.
Cooperating with the receptacle 14 is a cover or cap 15, which is preferably formed of hard rubber, metal, or any other desirable material which will be light and which may be placed over the upper portion of a bottle, as 16, which may 'be placed in the receptacle 14. Within the upper portion of the cap 14 7 O is placed a ring or collar 17, which is preferably of metal, and the cap 14l is secured thereto in any desired manner.
I n operation the device is secured to the bar and the bottle is placed in the receptacle 14, after which the cap 15 is placed over the upper portion of the bottle and the device is swung into position beneath the cork-extrac tor 2, whereupon the corkscrew 4 may be projected into the bottle-stopper and said stopper SQ withdrawn. 1f the bottle should accidentally become broken during the time of withdrawing the stopper, it is evident that the hands of the person manipulating the device will not be injured by reason of the broken glass, as the bottle is entirely covered bythe receptacle 14 and cap 15.
Owing to the increased thickness of the collar 17 it is evident that such collar will serve as an abutment between the upper portion of the bottle-neck and the cork-extracting device 2 when upward draft is applied to the bottle-stopper.
Thile I have shown in the accompanying drawing the preferred form of my invention,
it will be understood that I do not limit myself tothe precise form shown, for many of the details may be changed in form or posiably mounted on said rod, a bottle-holder rotatably mounted on said bracket, the same having' a socket in the shape of a frustum of a cone, whereby it is adapted to hold dierent sizes of bottles, and a cap-shield for the upper part of the bottle adapted to cooperate with said bottle-holder.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two Witnesses.
