BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,152, dated August 18, 1896. Application filed February 4 1896. Serial No. 578,009. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL NnwnLL EL- LARI), a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of Concord, county of Merrimac, and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles and Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to improvements in bottles and bottle-Stoppers, the object of the invention being to provide means whereby a bottle may be effectually sealed and corked in such a manner as to require a purchaser tion.

The device will be simple in construction, inexpensive, and operative, and by its use certain frauds now practiced by unscrupulous persons upon bottlers of proprietary liqnid products by the refilling and reuse of their marked bottles may be prevented.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specically set forth in the an? nexed claims.

' In the practice of my invention I provide a vertical rod A, having a button a upon its lower end and a head a' upon its upper por- Above this head is formed another button. a2. To the button CL2 is secured a cap B, of rubber or other eXible material, and to the button a is secured a cork or stopper C. This said stopper will be of a diam eter slightly larger than the interior diameter of the neck of the bottle, whereby when it is forced into engagement with said neck the contents of the bottle will be effectually sealed and said contents will not be permitted to come in contact with the metallic portions of the stopper.
As a means for retaining the stopper within the bottle said stopper has depending from its head a ltwo spring-metal arms D, which arms have formed integrally therewith upon their lower ends outwardly-projectin g lugs d, which lugs are adapted to engage with an annular groove e, formed in the neck of the bottle E. These said springs are secured to the head a' by means of a rivet a3.
In the operation of the device the bottle is first filled to a desired height. The stopper is then forced down into the neck thereof until the lugs d of the springs D are in engagement with the annular groove e, the cork C being tightly pressed within the neck of the bottle below the said groove and the cap B being in close engagement with the mouth of the bottle, whereby the bottle is effectually corked and the stopper thereof cannot be removed until the neck of the bottle is broken, and owing to the thinness of the neck at the point e the fracture will always occur upon an approximately straight line at said point. After breaking the bottle in the manner described the stopper as a whole can be readily removed, and it can be used again for an indefinite number of times.
I do not confine myself to the specific details of mechanical construction as described. above and illustrated in the drawings, as it will be obvious that under the scope of my invention I am entitled to make slight changes in structure.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination of a bottle having an annular groove in its neck; with a bottle-stopper comprising a vertical rod having a flexible cap at its Lipper end and a flexible cork at its lower end and spring-metal arms secured to its upper portion, said arms having lugs upon their outer ends adapted to engage with the said annular groove of the bottle; substantially as shown and described.
2. A bottle-stopper comprising a vertical rod having a cap upon its upper portion and buttons upon its upper and lower ends, said buttons having respectively a flexible cap and a flexible stopper secured thereto and said head having spring-metal arms depending therefrom, which arms have lugs thereon adapted to engage with an annular groove in ICO ro to engage with a bottle having an annuler groove in its neck; substantially as shown and described.
