T0 ALL WIIOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, P. J. CLARK, of West Meriden, in the county ot' New Haven, and State of Connecticut,
haveA invented a newand ir'nproved Lantern; andI do hereby declare that Vthe following is a full, clear, and exactdcscription thereof, which will enable others skiiled inthe art to make and use the same, reference 'being had to the accompanying drawings, forlning'a-partof this specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved application of guards to a, lantern, as hereinafterfullyshown and described, whcrebyseverai advantages are obtained, which will be hereinafter set forth.
In .the accompanying sheet of drawingsl i i Y Figure 1 is a vertical central section of my invention, taken in` the line :c sv, `fig. 2.. Figure 2 a horizontal section of the same, taken in the liney y, fig. 1. Similar letters of' reference indicate corresponding parts.
tern, and DX the lanip, fitted within the base', and secured` by any proper fastenin'gs, a a.- The upper edge of the base, @,sturned over 'and outward, to form a ange, b, at right angles to the-body represents the glass globe of a lantern, B the metal capC themetal base at the lower part ofthe lan--Y or main Vportionof t'hevbasc, as shown clearly in fig. 1, and this ange hastwo notches, c c,n1adein it, at oppo-` site-points, as shownfclcarly in iig. 2.
D' represents the guards of the lantern, which areconstructed of wire, as usual,`and have their upper ends fitted in the cap B. The lower ends of the guards pas's through a ring, E, of sheet metal, bent so as to be-convex on its upper surface and concave at its under surface,n as shown in iig. 1. The lower endsof two of the.v guards D, below the ring E, are bent or curved, in such a manner as to form shoulders, el, for the ange-b to catch over, audit willl be seen that, by placing the uflange in contact with the ring E, so that the ends ofthe guards which have the shoulders d on them may pass throughvthe notches lc c in the flange b, and then turning the parts of the lantern firmly connected together.
A spring-catch, F, is attached to the under side ot' the dan the base, C, the flange bwill catch over the shoulders d d, and the bar be'irmly connected/to the ring, and all ge 6, which engages withithe lower endet' one By this arrangement the guards, as well' as the base, are secured in position or firmly connected together.; and" all the parts rmly connected, and at the same time the globe A inay be readily attached, when necessary,
forclcaning or other purposes, and in ease of ,the breakingof a globe, a new one may be applied without any trouble or dillculty whatever. I
Having described my invention,` I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentl` The ring E, formed as shown, with the lower endsv ofV the guards D passing .through it, and two or more o't said guards provided with shoulders ci', in combination with the ange b on theupper edge of. the base, C, with notches c c inadein it, all arranged substantially as and for purpose set forth. I V
Q I further claim the spring'catchF attached to the under side ofthe Bange 1),-whensaid spring-catchis used in connection with the ring E and guards D, and' all constructed and arranged as set forth.
The above specification o' my invention signed by me, this 7th dayof March, 1868.
P.-J. CLARK.
