@Llp Sjclntule rennt tu in tlgrse @there llntmt mit mating pnt n1 tigt snlttf rTo ALL nfl-10M Ir MAY eoNenRN:
Be it known that I,.S. B. HEWETT, Jr., of`Ea-gle Grove, in the county of Wright, and State of Iowa, have invented a, new and useful Improved Wire-Fence Key;` and I do hereby declare that the followingnis a'full, clear, and exact vdescription ofthe same, reference being had tothe aeeomparliyingl drawings, and the letters and figures marked thereon, which form a part of this specieation,'nnd in whicb- Figure 1 represents a top view ofmy improved key, and v Figure 2 a side elevation of the same,sl1o\ving its application.
The nature of my invention consists in a novel device for tightening the wires of wire fence, or other wires 4er cords which it is desirable to make taut.
To enable those skilled in the art te manufacture and use ,my'inventiom I will proceed to describe the same fwith particularity. v
The samelettersof reference represent the corresponding parts inthe different figures. Alis a grooved wheel, the flnnge's'of which are extended-on opposite sides, so asV to admit of holes'B for the pins C. There is a vertical slot, D, in said wheel, whie'his made suliiciently'wide to admit-'the wire orcord tlratis to be tightened; and there are two led-ges or-lips, E, east upon or attached tothe top of the'wheel, said ledges or `lips boing-so constructed and arranged as to admit of a wrench or lever lbeing slipped underand between them, for the purpose of tur-ningthe wheel, as hereinafter described. The dotted line F shows the thick-ness of" the wall or drum of the wheel. I ordinarily east the whole device, except 'the pins C, in a single pieccof iron, butit may be mnde'of any 'suitablematerinh `The operation of my invention is as follows: place thewheel -upon the wire or cord HV, vby causing the I said wire to p'ass into the slot D; then, by means of a'wrenchor lever held by the lips E, :1s-above described, I turn the said wheelA, and thereby wind the wire on the drum of saidwheel till it is mede sufficiently tight, when, by placing .the pins C in the holes B, as shown in iig. 2, it is kept from turning back, and the wire is held taut, as desired'. l
The rinciml use for ,m im roved kc is-tiwhtenn'e-the wires com osinfrordiarV wire-fences', In deine P 1 s D e e this, I placca-key on euch of the wires,'and turn it, as above described, till thewirc-is suiicently tight, when I put in two nails, or any suitable pins, to hold the key from turning back, and'thc key `is allowed to remain suspended upon the wire. If the wire is found to be drawn too, tight as cold weather comes on, it is simply necessary to remove the pins, vand allow the key te turn till the wire is unwound sulheiently to `give it the desired tension, when the pins arereplaccd, and the key"r hangs suspended as before. v
Having` thus fully described thelconstruction and operation of lmy invention, I elainl- 1. The/combination ofthe wheel A, provided with flanges, as shown, and a slot, D, with the removable pins C, or their equivalent, arranged and-operatingas and for the purposes herein set forth.
'2. 4In combination with the above, I claim the arrangement of the jaws orlips E, as and for the purposes specified.
