-This' invention has for its object to furnis-h a more simple, cheap, and convenient fastening for window shades or curtains than has hitherto beenlin useg'and-it consists in providing ya ratchet, with a projecting arm,- anda pawl to engage therewith, both of which are attached to a plate or to the casing, as will be hereinafter described. The drawingv Figure 1, represents 4a front elevation'ot' a window, with my improved fastener attached.
Figure Z-is an edge view of the fastener detached. v v

A is the plate, to which the ratchet and pawl arerattached, and which isv fastened to the casing. B is the ratchet. C is the arm on the ratchet. D is a pulley-on the arm, around which the. curtain-cord is placed, as seen i'n the-drawing. There may'be merely a pin or fast pulley on the arm, instead of the loose pulley D, it' desired. E is the ratchet-pawl. F is thc shade or curtain-cord. The ratchet turns on its central pivot, g, and the pewl holds it in place, so that by turning down the arm the cord is tightened and held securely in place.
' This is'a very'simple. and 'durable arrangement, and its advantagesmust be obvious to all.
Having'vdescribed my invention, what I-claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters' Patent, is-
1. The ratchet l, the pawl E,'and the arm C, either with or without a loose pulley, D, arranged substantially as described foi` the purposes set forth. v
2.I In combination with the above, the'plate A,`for the purpose described.
