TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILnIAM C. HOOKER, of Abington, in the county-'of Knox, and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in' Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a'ljfull, clear, and
exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to malte and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this spcciieation, in whieh- Figure 1 is a sectional view ot'fmy improved gate. I Figure 2 is a cross-section of the same through the line y yyiig. 1. Similar letters of reference indicate correspondingfparts.
The object ofV this invention is to provide gate which shall he simple, cheap, and easily operated by persons in vehicles. L
The gate proper isshown at B BB, and is suspended by the planks C (Liax'ctl to' each side ot' the gate, as shown; the said planks' being pivoted on a common holt, c, which latter passes through the upper partof the swinging frameD D, as shown. i
- This swinging frame is pivcted on a rod, d d, passing through both partsof the said frame, and through the two uprights AA,`which latter are aixed-to and rise from the intersection of the hed-sillsAII and I, as shown. ,i
Between the uprights A A, andzabove the swinging frame, is shell a, containing two sheaves or rollers, and
to the top of the-swinging frame are attached two cords or chains 'E E, which pass'over the rollers in the said l shell, and through eyes(or over rollersor pulleys, if desireih) aiiixed to theposts K, which latter are axed to and rise from the bed-sillI, as shown.
The weights J J are attached to the cords for the purpose of taking up the slack ofl the cord or chains on the opposite side otlgate from the operator.
When the gate is closed, it rests in contact. with the post G, the latter being' slotted to receive, the end of the gate, as indicated by the dotted lines, the weight of the gate servingto keep it in firm Contact therewith.
When the gatenis to be opened, one of thec'ords is pulled, which raises the swinginglfrarne D D to a vertical position, and under theishell a. The gate, from the motionot` risingt` swings with an iniphlse,'whichcarries the frame D D past 'the shell, so that, by raising the cord at the moine-nt the said frame becomes vertical, the said impulse of the suspended gate carries the frame thro-ugh the uprights A A, and the' ga'te and its attachments take `the positio'n shown at D B B D CVC E a', which leaves the roadway free forv the vehicle or Vperson to pass.
Y .'A pedestrian has only to lift the gate in'the obvious manner.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The gato B B B, swung between the swinging frames D D, substantially in combination with cords E E, o1-y `their equivalent, the uprights A A and weights J J, all as and for the purpose set forth.
. WILLIAM C.' HOOKER.. Witnesses: 'JAMES Riemen 'lnnnjes H. GIvnNs
