Be it known that I, EDWARD WALTER,a citizen of the United States, lresiding at Keytes- `ville, in the county of Chariton and State of 5' Missouri, have. invented a new and use'fullmprovernent in Buggy `Top Attachments, of'
which the following is a' specilication.
` This inventionrelates generally to buggytops, and more particularly' to' certain'im- -I provements to Patent No. 719,538, granted to me February 3, 1903, the object of the pres-V ent invention being to provide a simpler and newer meansforunlocking the sliding sections of the rear upright's when it is .desired to lower the top; and with this object in view the invention consists in the novel features ofv construction, combination, and arrangement, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claims.

In a carriage-top constructed in accordance with my patent before referred to the end uprights consist of thetubular upper portions A 'and the solid lower portions B, the ,tubular portionssliding upon "the solid portions when the top is lowered, and when the top'i's'raised 335` it is of1 course necessary to securely lock the sections against movement, and this I accom- 'plish by means of the attachment forming the4 'subject-matter of this application and which 'consists of a transverse lockingfcatch C, which 40 is adapted to worlr through a transverse opening A', produced in thelower end of the tubular portion 'of the upright, andiengage the transverse groove B', produced in the upper" portion oi' the'solid member. which is journaled at each end in the members J, one of the said members being shown in detail in Fig.- t ofI my patent previously'mentioned,- and by having'the levers rigidly connected itis obvious that the operation of4 one Alever at onesid'e will foperate the lever and parts connected therewith lat the opposite sides, It will also be understood that as each end upright consists lof a tubular andl solidv portion each one` will be provided witha catch and operating mechanism.' Itis obvious from the construction of the device that it can'be operated either from within a buggy or carriage or from the ground. When the topis raised, thecatch will auton matically engage the transverse groove of the solid portion, and when it is 'desired' to lower the top it is ,only necessary to swing the lever upwardly, therebyv withdrawing 4the catch from the transverse groove, and the top can. then be folded. i
Having thus fully described my invention,
- what I claim Aas new, and desire to secure by 4l. rl`he combination with .the tubular and f solid members of the4 upright, the tubular .solid member vrod for operating -the said catch, as speciied.
2. The combination with the tubular member having a transverse opening, of the solid member having a transverse groove, the casting having a transverse opening, the catch pivoted to the casting, the spring carried by the casting and bearing upon the catch, and
the lever and'rod for operating the catch, as specified.
3. The combination with the tubular member having a transverse opening, of the solid member having a transverse groove, the casting having a transverse opening coinciding with the transverse opening in the` tubular member, the catch, the arms carrying the catch and pivoted to the casting, the yoke connecting the arms, the leaf-spring connected to the casting and bearing upon the catch, the lever and'therod connecting the lever and yoke, all arranged and adapted to operate sub stantially as shown and described.
