E. W. CANNON & E. H. JONES.
VEHICLE TOP.
atented June 16, 1885.
UNiTnn STATES EDWVARD W. CANNON AND ELIAS H. JONES, OF MILWVAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
VEHICLE-TOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 320,332, dated June 16, 1885.
Application filed February 16, 1885.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD W. CANNON and ELIAS H. JONES, both of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of \Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Braces for Vehicle-Tops; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Our invention relates to vehicle-tops; and it consists in certain devices for supporting the top in the position desired.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side view of a wagon-body embodying our improvement. Fig. 2 is an inside view of a top with our de vice in place thereon, shown in longitudinal section; and Fig. 3 is a detail.
A is the body of the wagon; B, the end of the seat, and B the back of the seat.
0 is the top, and G O C the bows, which at their lower ends are united and pivoted to a standard, D, in the usual manner.
E and E are two tubular sections, that to gelher form a brace for supporting the top when raised or holding it down when lowered. The section E is pivoted to a lug, e, on a plate, F, that is in turn fastened to the front bow, O, and this section has in its center a spindle, f, to receive a spring, f. The section E fits in section E, and the spring f projects into the section E, and has a constant tendency to force it out of section E.
G is a standard that is secured to the seat, and to which section E is pivoted at G. When the top is raised, the tension of the spring will hold the how 0 out toward the front of the wagon and steadily support the top; but by the exertion of a slight pressure on the upper part of the front how the spring f may be compressed and the top turned back untilthe brace E E has been carried to and beyonda vertical line, when the force of the spring, acting behind (No model.)
instead of in front of the pivot G,will throw the top back from over the seat and hold it down. When the brace E E stands about in a vertical line with its standard, the tendency of the spring f is to throw the top forward and up, and to prevent this and hold the top in the position shown in dotted lines when we desire to have the top only half down,we pivot a catch, B, to the back 13 for engagement over p the bow 0 This latter, as well as the brace and appurtenances, are preferably duplicated on every body to insure an even action.
We are aware of the patent granted to Alexander McKenzie on July 14, 1874, for devices for operating carriage-tops,showing a sectional brace analogous to ours, and we disclaim all that is shown and described in said patent.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a vehicle-top, the combination of the front bow, with plate F, secured thereto, and bearing-lug e, hollow section E, pivoted to said lug, and bearing central spindle f, vertical standard G, rising from the vehicle-seat, hollow section E, pivoted at G to the vertical standard G, and adapted to slide within section E, and the loose spiral spring f, all arranged and adapted to operate substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with thetop and yielding brace, of a hook, B, as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of \Vis cousin, in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD \V. OANN ON ELIAS H. JONES.

S. S. STOUT, H. G. UNDERWOOD.
