APPLICATION FILED 0OT.1 1903 Patented January 12, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT WM. OUMMINS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMB.
l SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 749,533, dated January 12, 1904.
1 Application filed October 1, 190s.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT WILLIAM CUM- I MINs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and 5 State of New York, have invented certain new y l and useful Improvements in Pompadour- Combs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and ,1 1 3 use the same.
My invention is an improved comb of that kind known as a pompadour-comb, the object of which is to provide means to support the front hair in a manner to form a pompadour- F roll above the forehead and to form a hollow space under the roll above the crown-hair to keep the head cool and pompadour-roll fresh and dry, and which also serves to support the hat and prevent the same from crushing the ,hair, the specific feature of my present improvement being means on the rear side of the bridge portion of the comb to engage the hair forming the roll and prevent the hair from separating at the center and sliding ofi on both sides of the head, the said means also serving to keep the pompadour more securely in place.
My invention consists in certain novel feal tures of construction hereinafter described y and claimed. l r
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is l a view showing the application of the comb. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the comb removed from the hair. Fig. 3 is a top plan View of i the same.
The comb l is here shown as of the ordinary construction of curved comb now in use. t On the upper side thereof isan arched bridgeroll-supporting attachment 2 for supporting the front hair forming the pompadour-roll,
the same material of which the comb is constructed; but it may be formed of any suitable material, and in the form of my invention here shown consists of a centrally arched or and this attachment is preferably formed from Serial No; 175,366. (No model.)
bowed strip 3, having its ends turned inwardly and connected to the upper side of the comb at the ends of the same, and a pair of strips 4: 5, which are curved laterally and lodgitudinally and arranged on opposite sides of the central strips 3, are bowed or arched longitudinally to correspond with the curvature of said central strip and are connected at their ends to the central strip in any suitable manner. If desired, the attachment may be formed from a single piece cut out in skeleton form or any ornamental design and secured to the comb. The rear strip 5 is serrated on its rear edge to form teeth6 to engage the hair forming the pompadourroll to prevent the hair from separating at the center and sliding oif the attachment 2, the said teeth or serrations also by their engagement with the hair of the pompadour-roll serving to keep the comb more securely in place.
The height of the attachment or the distance between the same and the comb may be varied for forming a high or low pompadourroll, according to the-taste.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the prin- "ciple or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A longitudinally-curved comb for the it rigidly fixed thereto and converging thereto my hand in presence of two subscribing Witat its endsf ti) support the Ipompadouriroll, nesses.
the teeth 0 t1e comb extenc ing in one Q irection and the said arched portion having teeth ALBERT OUMMINS' 5 extending in the reverse direction from those Witnesses:
of the comb, substantially as described. J. L. T. PHILGUS,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set A. KELLER.
