SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 748,963, dated January 5, 1904.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, JOSEPH LUPPINO, a subject of the King of Italy, and a resident of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented anew and usefulImprovement in Folding Beds; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the numerals of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-

This invention relates to an improvement in folding beds, and particularly to that class in which the posts at the head and foot are connected together with lazy-tongs and in which the springs and mattress lift sidewise in folding, the object of the invention being a simple arrangement of parts in which a firm support for the springs is secured and which permits of ready manipulation; and the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claims.

The head and foot members correspond with each other, and each consists of what for convenience I will term an inner post 2 and an outer post 3. The two posts 2 are connected by stay rods or braces L, and the two posts 3 are connected by stay rods or braces 5. Preferably and as herein shown the outer posts are formed from two pieces of angle-iron riveted together, providing two parallel flanges 6 and 7. The inner posts 2 have flanges 8 at their outer edges, and secured to these posts are legs 9, which, with the posts 2, form the letter H. The posts 2 and 3 are connected by lazy-tongs 10. The springs may be of any approved construction, comprising end rails 11 12 and side rails 13 and 14. At the bend in the legs 9 are blocks 15, to which the end rails are connected directly by pivots 16, and so that when the ends 11 are horizontal the side rails 13 and 14. will stand in line with the posts 2 and 3. At the ends of the side rails 13 and 14 rollers 17 are mounted to ride between the flanges 6 and 7 of the post 3.

In illustrating the invention the mattress has been omitted, as well as means for securing the mattress to the springs; but these means may be those usually employed in folding beds. As shown in Fig. l of the drawings, the parts are in their folded position, the springs standing vertically and the rollers 17 near the upper ends of the posts 3. To open the bed, it is only necessary to draw the posts 3 outward, as indicated in Fig. 3, when the springs will turn on the pivots 16 until they reach a horizontal position, at which time the Springs will rest upon stops 18, secured to the posts 3. To fold the bed, it is only necessary to slightly raise the rail 13, when by pressure upon the outer posts 3 or the rail 13 the springs will turn on their pivots and return to the upright position.

Instead of forming the posts 3 with two flanges they may be formed from an L- shaped angle-iron having a single flange 20, as shown in Fig. 6, in which case the side rails will carry two rollers 21 and 22, swivelly mounted so as to ride one on each side of the flange, or the rollers might be omitted and the posts 3 slotted to receive pins extending outward from the side rail, whereby the rails will be guided and moved by the movement of the posts.

Having fully described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. Afoldingbedcomprisinginnerandouter posts,theposts at the head and foot connected by lazy-tongs, legs secured to the inner posts, a spring-frame the end rails of which are pivoted directly to said legs, and connections between the said spring-frame and the outer posts, substantially as described.

2. Afolding bed comprising posts connected at the head and foot by lazy-tongs, the outer posts formed with a vertical flange, legs secured to the inner posts, a springframe the end rails of which are pivoted di- .0 and a roller secured to the outer side rail at each end and adapted to ride between said flanges, substantially as described.
