UNITED STATES PATENT EEicE,
JOHN ROBERT PATTERSON, OF MOSOA, COLORADO.
COT on BED FRAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,833, dated March 24:, 1896.
Application filed m r 27,1895. Serial No. 573,654. (No model.)
resident of Mosca, in the county of Costella' and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Got or Bed Frames, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to folding cots or beds, and the object thereof is to provide an improvement in this class of devices, which consists of a cot or bed frame so constructed as to be entirely, quickly, and easily taken apart and the separate parts thereof folded and packed together, and which may be as quickly and as easily placed in proper form for use; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the fol lowing specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improved cot or bed frame. Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views of details of the construction; and Fig. i a perspective view of one end of the frame, showing the parts detached, but arranged in order to be put together.
In the practice of my invention I provide a cot or bed frame comprising sectional side bars, which are preferably composed of three separate parts, A, B, and A, the parts A and A being precisely the same, and the part B constituting the central portion of the side bar of the bed-frame. The inner ends of the parts A are adapted to receivethe ends of the part B, and said parts may be adjustable, so as to make the bed of any desired length, and in practice I prefer to form these side barsof angle-iron, as shown in Fig. 2, the parts A being provided with inwardly-directed flanges a, by means of which the inner portion, 13, is held in place while being free to slide within the end portions, A; and I also provide a spring a on one end of which is formed a pin d which is adapted to enter a hole or opening cc formed in the parts A and B, so as to securely lock them together. Said hole or opening a is shown in Fig. 1, and the spring and pin are shown in Fig. 2, and also the hole or opening in dotted lines, and it will be run derstood that as many of these holes or openings as may be desired may be placed in the part B.
The outer end of each of the parts A is provided with a tubular inwardly-directed head O, which is adapted to receive the end bar D, two of which are employed, and which con stitute the end of the bed or cot frame, and
these end bars are preferably made of tubu lar iron, and connected with the end of each is a chain E, and I also employ end posts G, which are provided at their upper ends with eyes or rings g, through which the ends of the end bars D are adapted to be passed, and the lower ends of the end posts G are provided with flattened heads g which are pivotally connected with side braces 9 which extend upwardly and are connected with a head 9 of an gle-iron, which is adapted to be connected with the end pieces A of the side bars by means of a spring H, having a pin h at the end thereof, which passes through a hole in said head g and a corresponding hole in the adjacent end piece A of the side bar.
It will be understood that the spring H is secured to the part A and that the head g may be detached from said part whenever de' sired. In coupling the end bars D and the side bars together the end of the former is passed through the ring or eye G of the corner post or posts and then into the tubular head 0, and the chain E is then carried around and secured to a lug or projection L; and the object of this chain is to keep said parts together when detached or not set up for use as a cot or bed frame, and the end bars D are also provided with springs d having pins (1 at their outer ends which are adapted to enter holes (1*, formed in the tubular head O, whereby said parts may be securely locked together.
The body portion of the cot or bed consists of a strip or strips M of canvas or any preferred material which may be laced together at m and the entire device may be taken apart and folded together or in connection with the end bars D or one of said end bars, and I also provide straps O by which when said parts are thus packed or folded together they may be secured in such position, and in this operation the separate sections of the side bars are disconnected. The end posts are also disconnected from the side bars and the end bars and all of said parts are placed together and then the canvas or other material M is wrapped around the same and the straps O are applied thereto. It will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and which is also comparatively inexpensive and which may be folded into acompact or convenient form and which is thus capable of being easily transported from one point to another without great expense or inconvenience.
My invention is not limited to the exact form, construction and arrangement of parts herein described; and I therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
I'Iaving fully described my invention, its construction and operation, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The herein-described bed or cot frame, which com prises side bars which are composed of sections and are adapted to be folded together, the end sections being provided with tubular heads, and end bars which are adapted to be inserted into said tubular heads, said frame being also provided with vertical legs or corner-supports, the upper ends of which are provided with rings or eyes through which the end bars are adapted to be inserted, and the bases of said supports or legs being provided with braces which are pivotally connected therewith, and which are also connected with the side bars, said parts being constructed, combined and arranged, substantially as shown and described.
2. The herein-described bed or cot frame, which comprises side bars which are composed of sections and are adapted to be folded together, the end sections being provided with tubular heads, and end bars which are adapted to be inserted into said tubular heads, said frame being also provided with vertical legs or corner-supports, the upper ends of which are provided with rings or eyes through which the end bars are adapted to be inserted, and the bases of said supports or legs being provided with braces which are pivotally connected therewith, and which are also connected with the side bars, by means of angular heads provided with holes or openings which correspond with similar holes or openings formed in the ends of the side bars, and springs connected with said side bars or the ends thereof, and provided with pins which are adapted to enter said holes or openings, sub stantially as shown and described.
3. The herein-described bed or cot frame, which comprises side bars which are composed of sections and are adapted .to be folded together, the end sections being provided with tubular heads, and end bars which are adapted to be inserted into said tubular heads, said frame being also provided with vertical legs or corner-supports, the upper ends of which are provided with rings or eyes through which the end bars are adapted to be inserted, and the bases of said supports or legs being provided with braces which are pivotally connected therewith, and which are also connected with the side bars, by means of angular heads provided with holes or openings which correspond with similar holes or openings formed in the ends of the side bars, and springs connected with said side bars or the ends thereof, and provided with pins which are adapted to enter said holes or openings, and the separate sections of the side bars being composed of angle-iron, and said sections being also held together by springs provided with pins which are adapted to enter holes or openings formed in the separate sections, substantially as shown and described.
4. The herein-described cot or bed frame which comprises side bars which are composed of sections which are detachably connected and adapted to be longitudinally adjusted. said side bars being composed of angle-iron. and the ends of the end sect-ions being provided with transverse tubular heads which are adapted to receive the end bars of the frame which are tubular in form, said end bars being also provided with chains which are adapted to be passed through said transverse tubular heads, and said frame being also provided with corner legs or supports, the upper ends of which are provided with rings or eyes through which the end bars are adapted to be inserted, and the lower ends of said corner posts or supports being provided with braces which are pivoted thereto, and the other ends of which are adapted to be detach-ably connected with the side bars of the frame, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 19th day of December, 1895.
JOHN ROBERT PATTERSON.
