Description
C. H. SUTHERLAND. FOLDING-CHAIRS.
No. 195,545, Patented Sept.25.l877.
I 1 BY W ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT CFFICE.
CHARLES H. SUTHERLAND, OF BROWNSBURG, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT lN FOLDING CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,545, dated September 25, 1877 application filed April 9, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES H. SUTHER- LAND, of Brownsburg, in the county of Rockbridge and State of Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Folding Ohair, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a vertical section on line .10 w in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 represents the chair folded. Fig. 4 is a detail section on line y y of Fig. 1.
The invention relates to an improvement in the class of folding chairs whose back-pieces and legs are detachably connected.
The improvement relates to the use of hinged or pivoted arms, which are adapted to be detachably connected with the back-pieces of the chair, and thus'lock the several movable parts of the frame in the open or extended position, as hereinafter described.
' In the drawing, A A are rockers, to which the back-pieces B B are pivoted, being placed inside the rockers. G G are the rear legs, which are pivoted to the outside of the rockers at at. These legs extend upward to receive the arm-pieces D, to which they are pivoted.
A rod, E, connects the legs 0', and is received by semicircular notches b formed in the back-pieces B. A large rod, 0, connects the legs Oat the front of the chair, and a small rod, d, and awide head-piece, 0, connect the back-pieces B. A piece, f, of webbing or other suitable textile material, is attached to the larger rod 0 and to the wide head-piece e, and also to strips fastened upon the inner sides of the back -pieces B. The rear ends of the arms D rest in notches 9 formed in the back-pieces B, thus acting as braces between the back-pieces B and the upper ends of legs 0, so that they hold said parts B 0 locked together at the detachable joint E b. When the rear notched ends of the arms D are raised out of the notches g in the back-pieces B, they will pass outside of the latter, and the rod or round E being lifted out of notches b, the whole frame may be folded into compact form, as shown in Fig. 3.
The foot-board G is pivoted to the rockers A to adapt it to be folded back out of the way, or to be extended to support the feet of the occupant of the chair.
I do not claim a folding chair provided with arms which are pivoted to the legs and have an adjustable connection with the back-pieces; nor do I claim an open joint between the legs and back-pieces of such a chair.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Tbe combination, in a chair with rockers A, of the leg B, having notch 12, adapted to engage with leg 0 by the rod E, the side posts having notches g, and the notched arms D, pivoted to the front legs, and adapted to lock the two adjustable parts of the frame in position when unfolded, all substantially as shown and described.
CHARLES H. SUTHERLAND.
