PATENT OFFICE.
BACK-REST FOR DISPLAY-CARDS, 86C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 730,027, dated June 2, 1903.
Application filed March 6, 1901. Serial No. 50,030. (No model.)
a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Back Rests for Display-Cards, &c., of. which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and efficient back-rest for display-cards and other articles, the device, as generally stated, comprising a basal portion attachable to the card, 850., a support hingedly connected with such portion, so that it (the support) may be folded against or swung outward from the card, &c., and a brace hingedly connected with such basal portion and having a sliding connection with the support, whereby the brace may be folded with the support or be swung outward with the latter in a manner gous device to be supported in an inclinedposition, and B represents my improved backrest therefor. This back-rest comprises a basal strip 1), a support I), and a brace Z2 The strip bis composed, preferably, of a single piece of sheet metal or other suitable material, with its extremities curled outward to form transverse eyes 11 This strip is adapted to be fastened in a vertical position along the back of the card, the fastening being preferably eifected by means of a piece of paper I) or the like imposed on and cemented to the strip and card. The support is composed of a single piece ofwire bent to form a transverse member 17 which is pivoted in the upper eye of the strip, two depending side members I), which slightly diverge from the ends of the member and extend somewhat below the lower end of the strip, two inwardlyturned portions 5 a connected or twisted portion 11 and two diverging portions 19 which terminate at bers being provided at their free extremities with elongated eyes I), through which loosely extend the side members of the support, so that the brace and support will have a free sliding connection with each other. By this construction it. will be seen that if the brace be swung outward from the back it will carry therewith the swinging support in a manner to maintain the latter in the supporting position, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, and if, on the other hand, the brace be folded upward against the back it will likewise carry therewith the support, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The extremities of the brace, in which the eyes are formed, are bent slightly outward, as indicated most clearly at :1; in Fig. I 3, so that when the parts are folded the support will be close against the back of the card and embrace thebrace.
It will be observed that when the back-rest is in open position the eyes of the brace engage and interlock with the corners g of the support, so as to render the structure stable and avoid its accidental collapse, To aid still more effectually in this respect the brace when the rest is open inclines downwardly fromthe back tothe support. 2
I claim 7 l. A back-rest comprising a basal portion, a support hinged thereto including a trans verse member 12 two depending side members I), and two inwardly-turned members I)", having locking-corners y; a brace composed of. a single piece of wire bent into U shape, the transverse member thereof being pivoted to the basal portion and the side members being provided with eyes through which loosely extend the side members of the said support, I
