The present invention relates to improvements in racks and stands, and has reference more particularly to a device for holding and displaying newspapers, magazines, and other 5 similar articles. v

One of the important objects of th-e present invention is to provide a display rack of the above mentioned character that includes a support on which is arranged a series of gripping members so constructed as to permit a newspaper to be readily inserted or removed from between the adjacent gripping members, said gripping members being disposed in overlapping relation.

A further object is to provide a newspaper display rack of the above mentioned character which is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable, and further. well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed. Y

Other objects of the invention will become apparent as the nature of the invention proceeds and when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.

In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application and wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the display rack embodying my invention, in thesame position for use.

Figure 2 is a front elevation of the rack for more clearly disclosing the construction ot the gripping member, and

Figure 3 is a sectional view, taken approximately on the line 3 3 of Figure 1, looking downwardly.

In the drawing, wherein for the purpose o i illustration is shown the preferred einbodi- 4o ment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates my improved display rack, the same comprising a rectangular shaped frame constructed of angle iron side bars 2 and 3 that are connected at their upper ends in parallel spaced relation by the cross bar 4, which is also of angle iron material. A cross strip 5 extends between the lower end portions of the angle iron side bars as clearly illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawing.- A longitudinally extending flat bar or strip 6 is disposed between the angle iron sid-e bars 2 and 3, and the upper end of the longitudinal strip 6 is secured to the top cross piece 4, while the lower end of `said longitudinally disposed strip is connected to the intermediate portion of the bottom cross strip 'as clearly suggested in Figure 2 of the drawing.

For the purpose of supporting the frame in a slightly tilted vertical position, I provide the supporting legs 7, a pair of such legs 6l `there is provided for association with each supporting leg and its adjacent side bar a pair of arms 11 and 12. These arms are pivotally connected together, at their inner opposed ends as at 13.

The outer end of the arm 11 is pivotally connected to the outer side of the respective angle iron side bar of the frame, while the outer end oi the complementary arm is pivotally connected to the outer side face ofthe adjacent supporting leg and this is clearly shown in Figures 1 and 3 of the drawings. l

By swinging the arms 11 and 12 upwardly, the supporting legs may be moved inwardly toward the i'rame of the rack to provide a compact structure that can be stored away when not in use, without occupying any considerable amount of space. `When the display rack is to be used, the parts are disposed in the manner as shown in Figure 1.

Forming a salient part of the present invention is an improved newspaper gripping member, a series of such members being provided. Each of these gripping members which is denoted generally by the reference character 14 is formed from a single strand of spring wire, bent `into substantially inverted lGU U-shaped formation, the arms 15 and 16 slightly converging toward each other, from the crown portion 17.

Each of the arms of each U-shaped gripping member is formed adjacent its end with a series of abutting loops, whereby to form the coiled spring units 18. The free ends of the arms of each U-shaped gripping member are disposed through suitable openings 19 provided therefor in the front side of the angle iron side bars of the frame and are then bent upwardly against the rear face of the front side of the respective angle iron side bar as shown at 20, in Figure 1, so that said U-shaped gripping members will be roperly supported on the frame, and it will 'e observed that the gripping members are so arranged that the crown portion 17 engages the arms 15 and 16 of the next uppermost gripping member and the coil spring units 18 will retain the gripping members in engagement with the next adjacent gripping member, said coil spring units having a tendency to normally urge the gripping members inwardly toward the frame of the rack.

When the parts are arranged as shown in the drawings, a newspaper or other article may be readily inserted between any adjacent pair of gripping members and the lower ad edge of the paper will rest on the coil spring unit 18 and will be properly maintained and positioned on the rack and against displacement therefrom by reason of the coil spring unit tensioning or urging the gripping memas, bers against the frame.

The arrangement ofthe gripping members in overlapping relation will permit a variety of newspapers to be displayed on the rack, so that the upper portions of the several periodicals can be viewed without necessitatingY the removal ofthe periodical from the rack, except when purchasing the same.

The provision of a display rack of the above mentioned character enables the same to be constructed at a very low cost, and yet be strong and durable, and at all times positive and eiiicient in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.

While I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, Without departing from the spirit of the invention orthe scope of the appended claim.

What I'claim as new is:

A device for holding and displaying newspapers and the like comprising a supporting framey including parallel spaced vertically disposed side bars, cross bars connecting said side bars, supporting legs hingedly connected at their upper ends to the respective side bars, hinged braces between the intermediate portions of the supporting legs and the respective side bars of the frames, a

ser-iesof gripping members each of' substan- U-shaped gripping members being disposed upon the frame in overlapping relation and adapted to receive the newspaper therebetween, the coil spring units of the respective gripping members providing a support for the paper, said coil spring units normally 5 urging the respective U-shaped gripping members inwardly against one another for maintaining the papers securely therebetween.
