PATENT OFFICE.
MEANS FOR SECURING BUSKS TO CORSETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 728,305, dated May 19, 1903.
Application filed February 17, 1903. $eria1No. 143,818. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD SCALES, corset manufacturer, a subject ofthe King of Great Britain, residing at Waveney House, London Road, Newark-upon-Trent, county of Nottingham, England, have invented a new or Improved Means for Securing Busks to Corsets, (in respect of which I applied for Letters Patent in Great Britain on the 8th of January, 1903, under N0. 546,) of which the followin is a specification.
My invention relates to a new orimproved means for securing busks to corsets, so that in case of breakage the said busks can be at once removed and new busks can be easily and quicklyreplaced without sewing and without any detriment or disfigurement to the corset.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows two adjacent edges of a corset with the busks as secured or fixed in place according to my invention, each of the busks being partly exposed. Figs. 2 and 3 are separate detached views of typesof the special form of clip employed by me.
In carrying out my invention I first add a long flap A down the extreme front of the corset, which fiap is of itself distinct, being cut and stitched at the top and bottom of the corset in such a manner as to allow the said flap A to perform the under-mentioned purpose. I form the usual openings in the flap A for the fasteners a and a of the busks B and pass them through in the ordinary way. I then fold this flap A around the busk B, so as to embrace and cover the said busk, as in Fig. 1, which method of folding the said flap causes the busks to be self-held inplace on the figure. Then to hold the materiallthus folded and to render the grip effecually secure I make use of specially-designed spring clips or clamps C and O, employed as shown, for adaptation on the fastenings d and a of the busk tohold the busk: B and flap A strongly embraced, thus securing the'busksB in the corsets. These said clips or clamps O and O are so placed on the busks that the fastenings on the one busk and the studs on the other busk hold them immovable. I make these spring clips or clamps O and O of any suitable substance-such, for instance, as tempered steel, and so prepared to prevent any discoloration of fabric. These clips or clamps O and C securely embrace the busks B vand edges of the folded fabric A'in such a way that in the case of its being necessary toremove the busks the operation of replacing the busks can be performed without any appreciable trouble, cost, or loss of time. Both busks are similarly folded and held by the clips or clamps O and O aforesaid.
I do not confine my invention to the particular shape, design, or construction of spring clips or clamps shown in the drawings, as same may be modified to suit diiferent requirements.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that What I claim is- In combination in a corset, a busk, fasteners thereon, a free flap on the corset, a U- shaped clip adapted to embrace the busk to hold the free flapon the same,-said clip having arms to fit over the fasteners.
In witness whereof lhave hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
RICHARD SCALES.
Witnesses WM. WHITTLEY, ALFRED CLARKE.
