JOEL U. ADAMS, 01E CINCINNATI, OHIO.
STEEL FOR, GOBSETS OB BELT$.
Application filed. September 8, 1921. Serial No. 499,134..
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that l, Joni. U. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Steel for Corsets or Belts, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide novel means for fastening the stays in the casing of an abdominal belt or corset in such a way that they can not slip endwise and protrude through the casing at either end.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, with in the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings :Figure 1 shows in front elevation, a device constructed in ac cordance with the invention, parts being broken away; Figure 2 is a plan showing the reinforcing element; Figure 3 is a section on the line 33 of Figure 1; Figure l is a section on the line 4:4c of Figure 1.
The numeral 1 marks a reinforcing element, ordinarily in the form of a resilient strip and made at present, as a general thing, of steel. The reinforcing element is provided in its opposite edges with seats 2 disposed out of alinement with each other. The reinforcing element 1 may have the usual caps 3 on its ends. Flexible elements i, such as pieces of tape are wound about the reinforcing element 1 and engage in the seats 2, the ends 5 of the reinforcing elements extending in opposite directions. The numeral 6 denotes a covering which may be of cloth, leather or any other suitable material, the edges 7 of the covering being turned inwardly, so that the covering is of double thickness. The covering 6 is placed in the reinforcing element 1, the ends 8 of the covering being folded to extend behind the reinforcing element and to cover the ends of the reinforcing element. The reinforcing element and the covering 6 are placed against the body 9 of a corset, abdominal belt or the like, the covering being connected to the body 9 by lines of side stitching shown at 10. This stitching, indicated at 10, engages the oppositely extended ends 5 of the flexible elements l and attaches them to the body 9. Lines of end stitching 11. connect the extremities of the covering 6 with the body 9.
The construction of the device is such that the reinforcing element 1 will be held securely on the body 9, it being possible for the reinforcing element to bend with the body 9, but it being practically impossible for the reinforcing element to shift its position appreciably, or to work its way through the body 9 or the covering 6.
it will be understood that after the device has been completed as shown in Figure 1, the ends 5 of the flexible element 4 may be clipped off close to the longitudinal edges of the covering 6.
lhe stitching at 10 constitutes a single means for securing both the covering 6 and the ends 5 of the flexible elements 4 to the body 9 along the longitudinal edges of the reinforcing element 1.
What is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, a reinforcing element; a flexible member wound about the reinforcing element and having oppositely extended ends; a body; a coverfor the reinforcing element; and a single means for securing both the covering and the ends of the flexible member to the body along the longitudinal edges of the reinforcing element.
2. In device of the class described, a reinforcing element having notches located out of alinement with each other; a flexible member wound about the reinforcing ele ment and engaged in the notches, the flex-' ible member having oppositely projecting ends; a body; a covering for the reinforcing element; and means for securing the covering and the ends of the flexible member to the body.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOEL U. ADAMS.
Witnesses RITA SCHEHL, Ann. Srnrnnnson.
