SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent no. 723,640, dated March '24, 1903. Application filed December 26, 1902. Serial No. 136,520. (No model.)

The invention comprises a base on which are mounted one or more grippers, these.
grippers being adapted to engage threads on the tie-rod, and over said grippers is placed a rocking cam member which actuates the grippers to engage or disengage the rod, as may be desired. This enables the rod to be quickly and securely fastened, and since the grippers move transversely of the rod toward and from the threads there is no danger of stripping the threads from the rods in the act of disengagement.
This specification is an exact description of one example of my invention, while the claims define the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

These grippers have their adjacent ends formed with rounded notches 21, and the walls of said notches are threaded so as to engage with threads on the rod 14. When the grippers 20 are moved out into the positionshown in Fig. 4, the rod 14 is released; but when the grippers are moved inward into engagement with the rod, as shown in Fig. 2, the rod will be held securely.
A circular cup 22 is fitted over the base and is held to turn thereon around the center of the rod 14 by means of screws 23 orlike headed devices, these screws being fastened into the base 16 and bearing on an annular flange 24, In this cup are formed two cam-slots 25, and said slots loosely receive pins 26, projecting from therespective grippers 20. This cup 22 formsa cam member, and as it is turned the gripper-blocks 20- are moved in or out, according to the direction in which the cup is moved. On the'inner walls'of the cup at opposite sides are arranged cams 27, which are adapted, respectively, to work against lugs 28, formed on the outer ends of the gripper-blocks 20, and as the cup or cam member 22 is turned to throw the gripperblooks into active position the cams 27 simultaneously act to assist the inward movement of the grippers, the cams therefore reinforcing the action of the slots on the inward movement of the grippers.
A cap 29 is fastened by screws 30 or any other suitable means to the top of the shell 22, and this top has a finger-piece 31, projecting therefrom and adaptedv to run over a quadrant 32, said finger-piece havinga lug 33,- which is arranged to enter either one of two or more openings 34 in the quadrant, thus holding the arm in the desired position. The plate 32 has its ends slotted, as indicated at the spirit and scope thereof.
35, and fastening-screws 36 are passed through these slotted ends, so as adjustably to secure the quadrant. This enables the quadrants to be shifted to the desired position with respect to the rod-fastening.
The use and advantages of the invention will be fully understood from the foregoing description. In order to grip the rod, it is only necessary to throw the finger-piece 31 so as to move inward the grippers, and to release the load a reversal of this movement is all that is required. The cap 29, as best shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is provided with a screw-plug 87,normallyclosinga centrally-disposed opening in the cap, and when this plug is removed the rod may project through the cap. This is usual in cases where the rod is of such length as to project beyond the cap.
Various changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of my invention may be resorted to at will without departing from Hence I consider myself entitled to all such variations as may lie within the intent of my claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A rod-fastening, comprising the combination with the threaded rod of a base, a gripper having threads thereon, and means for moving the gripper into and out of engagement with threaded portion of the rod.
2. The combination of a base, a gripper mounted to move thereon, a member turning on the base and having a cam-slot therein, a member projecting from the gripper and working in the cam-slot, and. a cam attached to said turning member and working with the gripper to reinforce the action of the camslot on the movement of the gripper into active position.
The combination of a base, a gripper arranged to move thereon, a cup mounted to turn over the base and havinga cam-slot therein, a pin projecting from the gripper and lying loosely in the cam-slot, and a cam attached to the inner side of the cup and hearing against the gripper.
4. The combination of a base, a gripper arranged to move thereon, a cup mounted to turn over the base and having a cam-slot therein, a pin projecting from the gripper and lying loosely inthe cam-slot, a cam attached to the inner side of the cup and bearing against the gripper, and a finger-arm projecting from the cup.
5. The combination of a base, a gripper arranged to move thereon, a cup mounted to turn over the base and having a cam-slot therein, .a pin projecting from the gripper and lying loosely in the cam-slot, a cam attached to the inner side of the cup and bearing against the gripper, a finger-arm projecting from the cup, and aquadrant over which the finger-arm moves, said quadrant having a notch therein and the finger-arm having a projection working with the notch.
6. The combination of a base, a gripper mounted to move thereon, a member turning on the base and having a cam-slot therein, a member projecting from the gripper and working in the cam-slot, a cam attached to said turning member and Working with the gripper to reinforce the action of the camslot on the movement of the gripper into active position, a cap fastened to the cup and having a finger-arm projecting therefrom and also a centrally-disposed opening, and a plug removably secured in said opening.
7. The combination of a base, a gripper mounted to move thereon, a cam member 00- acting with the gripper to operate it, a cap fastened to the cam member and havinga finger-arm projecting therefrom, said cap having a centrally-disposed opening for the purpose specified, and a plug removably secured in said opening.
8. In a wagon-rod fastening, the combination with the wagon-body and the rod, of a base fastened to the wagon-body, a cap arranged to turn on the base, a gripper contained within the cap and mounted to move toward and from the rod, and means acting between the cap and gripper to operate the gripper upon the turning of the cap.
