Description
UNITED STATES PA'ENT QFFIGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 17, 1906.
Application filed December 5,1905. serio Nn. 290,500.
To ali! when?, it r11/yf zo/mem:
Be it known that l, HENRY lVALDsoHMIDT, a citizen. of the United States, and a resident of Benson, in the county of Woodford and State of Illinois, liaveinvented a new and improved Lantern-H older, of which the oilowin is a iuil, clear, and exact description.
his invention relates to improvements in holders for lanternsl or lamps used on vehicles-such as bnggie, wagons, and the likeh the object being to provide a holder that will be simple in construction, inexpensive, and having no parts liable to get out of order, and that may be readily placed in position.
I Will describe a lantern-holder embodying my invention and then point out the 'novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming s part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lanternholder embodying niv invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation thereof. Fic. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, andQFig. 4 shows a supporting-pin that may be employed in some instances.
Referring to the drawings, 5 designates a V base-plate of suitable material--such, for instance, as metai-and this plate is secured to a device for attaching the holder to the front bow of a buggy-top or the like. This holder consists of a plate 6, adapted to rest upon the ftop of the bow and having downwardly-exlended front members 7, from which clamping-j aws 8 extend inward. These clamping- ;aws S have ta psd holes for receiving set` screws 9. n t ie set-screws are hangers i9,
' in which the set-screws may freely turn, and
these Washers are nrevided with points or ings 1i, designed toA engage in the bow and prevent rotary movement of the washers.
- The holding device proper consists of two semicircular members 12, which are designed to swing apart relatively to each other and to swing over the late.
The ends of the members l2 are ma e in the form of a hinged jaw and are perforated to c# a ye upon the pivotdqo the pl gin 13, rigidly attache ate and aving a screw-thread engaged by a thumbnut 14. At the ront of the plate 5 are upwardly-extended lugs l5, ivotally connected, to which is a locking-yo e 16. This locking-yoke has two spaced side members which are mounted to swing on pivots 17 passed through the lugs,
as cle-irly indicatedin Fig. j closed position, a plate In the operation when the lantern :Jr-lampis placed upon the plate 5 the members 12 are moved inward to engage uponv the ange of the lantern or iamp. Then the locking device 16 is to be turned upward over the pro, jections ,19 and the pin 20 inserted, as clearly y In some instances shown in the drawings.
it may be desired to piace a lamp, such as are Y,"
used on the sides of carriages, at the conter or at the sides of the vehicle. In such case I employ pins 22, (see Fig. 4,.) which on the re*- niove-l of the plate 5 and the locking device may be placed in a hole 23 in the center 0f the plate 6 or in holes 23EL at the ends of said plate, the lamp being sus ended on seid pin.
Having thus describe my invention, I cieim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A support for a lantern or lern for a vehicie, comprising a plate, a three ed pin rigidly ettsohed to said plate, semicircular members mounted to swing on said pin, a thumb-nut for engaging with the thread of the pin, the free ends of said semicircular members being turned outward, lugs at the front of the plate, and a locking device mounted to-swing on said lugs and adapted to engage over said ontwar ly-turned portions.
2. A lantern or lamp-holder comprisingua plate, means for securing the same to a ve cle-top, a threaded in extended upward from the rear side of the iste, semicircular holding members montes to swing on said in, a Vthumb-nut engaging Vwith the pin, the
ee ends of said senncirculer members being turned outward and notched at the top, lugs on the forward portion ofthe plate, a locking device havin swinging connection with the lugs, the sai locking device having perforations and a split pin for passing through said perforations and engaging in said notches.
3. A lantern or lamp-holder for a vehicle, comprisin a plate, semicircuiar holding members raving swingiirlig connection with the plate, means for loc 'ng said members 1n to which the firstlIO named p late is attached, the said lasbmnned 1 In testimony Wheideof I have signed my plate being adapted to enga re upon the upname to this specification "in the presence of per poi-tion of :L top bow or t ie like, the said two subsorlbin witnesses.
