G. S. FISCHER.
CLEAT FOR END GATES.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 22. ms.

Fig.1;
. tion herein set forth.
GOTTHARDT S. FISCHER, OF KENESAW, NEBRASKA.
cLEA'r-ron END-GATES.
Application filed May 22,
To all whom it may concern Be it known "that I, GOTTH'ARDT S. FIscHnR, citizen of the United States, residing at Kenesaw, in the county of Adams and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Cleat for EndGates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in end gate cleats and the object is to provide a simple and efficient cleat which can be manufactured at a small cost, and which is applicable to either side of the vehicle body. A further object is in the provision of means for attaching plates to said cleats for forming the fastenings for the rods in draw ing the sides of the body together for fastening the end gate in position.
The invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim. Many slight changes may be made in the form and arrangement of the several parts to be described without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention and hence I do not wish to be limited to the exact construc- In the accompanying drawings,-Figure 1 is a view in top plan showing the application of the inventionto a vehicle body. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of one of the side boards. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view through one of the side boards and the adjacent cleat, and Fig. 4: is a perspective View of the cleat.
A and B represent the sides of the box or body of a wagon. Connected to the sides, and on the interior surfaces thereof, are body portions 1 of the cleats which are preferably made of metal. Formed integrally with the body portion of each cleat are two vertical ribs 2, 2, between which the ends of the end gate 3 are received. The end gate slides vertically between the said ribs. The cleats are fastened tothe sides by means of rivets 4. The ends of the cleats are bent around the ends of the sides A and B forming flanges 5 for protecting the ends of the sides. Lips 6 are formed on the angular portions 5 and bent at right angles thereto for engaging the exterior surface of the sides. The flanges 5 and the lips 6 of the cleat form a protecting cover for the ends of the sides preventing the ends from chipping or splitting and thereby overcoming any Specification of Letters Patent.
I Patented May 1c, 1916. 1915. Serial no. 29,801.
possibility of weakening the ends of the sides into which the cleats are fastened.
Holes or openings 7 are formed in each of the cleats on each side of the pair of ribs 2, that is the openings are formed in the body portion 1 adjacent to the exterior surfaces of the ribs 2.
Fastening or tightening rods 8, 8, extend through the sides A and B and through. the openings 7 of the cleats. Two such rods are provided, one on each side of the end gate. Winged heads 9 are connected to a terminal of each rod 8 for feeding and rotating the rods. Plates. 10 are connected to the exterior surface of the side A by rivets 11, which pass through the side A and connect the plates to the cleat 1. These plates are provided with screw-threaded openings 12 in which the other terminals of the rods 8 are received, which are provided with screw threads, whereby screw-threaded engagement is formed between the rods and the plates for drawing the sides A and B together and fastening the end gate 3 therebetween. These plates perform two functions; first, they serve as nuts for the end of the rods, and second, they contribute toward holding the cleats to the body.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided cleats which can be applied to either side of the wagon body thereby eliminating the necessity of making right and left hand cleats as my cleats are interchangeable. Furthermore, the cleats are so constructed that the ends of the side boards are protected by the cleats extending across the ends and engaging each side of the side boards.
What is claimed is,
The combination with a wagon box, and an end gate, of a pair ofplates engaging against the inner opposite faces of the sides of the wagon box, having upper and lower straight edges and having rear outwardly overturned edges lapping around and pro- 1 through the inner and outer plates and the interposed side to secure the plates to the side, and a transverse rod at each side of the end gate adapted-for engagement through inner plate. to the sideofth'ewagon box, said inner plate retaining the binding nuts in place upon the removal of said rods.
In testimony, thatI claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature 5 in the presence of twowitnesses.
. GOTTHARDT S. FISCHER.
