i Letters Patent No. 72,134, datedv .December 10` 1867.
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.

l TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. WADE, of Jefferson City, county of Cole, State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improved Washing-,Machinevof which the following is a full, clear, and exact description,V reference being had to the annexed drawing, making apart of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents an elevation of my invention, with the wash-tubin section.
Figure 2 represents a top view of the stationary trash-board.
Similar letters indicate like parts. l
My invention consists of two circular virashbonrds, A andV B, fig. 1, and B, fig. 2, one of them,`B, having springs, c c c, iig. 2, so fitted `into its circumference thatfwhen placed in a common'wash-tub, D, fig. 1, it may by their action be firmly held in place; the other, A, is attached to a shaft, E, having at its end a spiral metal plate, YF. Both A and B are perforated, as shown in iig. 2, und have corrugations at right angles to each other, as shown at 1, 2, 3, Ste., iig. 2, the eorrugations being'on the top ofV B and the under'side of A. B rests upon blocks, two of which are shown at lc l'c, iig. 1, which raise ita little above the bottom of the tub, so that the water can circulate freely beneath the board, which also, by the acticnof the springsis kept a sufficient distance from the sides of th'e tub to allow the water to flow around it 'on all sides. 'I have a stand, G, with an upright, H, at one end', whose extremity passes through a slot in a lever, M, and is secured by a pin, n. i
The tub being placed on this stand, and secured byA cleats or other device,.the plate F passes through another slot in the lever, and secured by a pin placed through it at o. This slot is lined with metal, toprevent its wearing. The lever being raised, the water and clothes are placed in the tub, and then, by working the lever up and down, a reciprocating rotary motion is given to the board A, thus rubbing the clothes, and at the sometime pressing the water through' them, the corrugations on the boards serving'to draw the clothes to the centre, thereby insuring their proper position vfor the pressure of the board. The springs c c c, pointing in the direction of the rotary motion of the board A, prevent the board B from beingmoved by its action. These boards' may, by means of the springs, be adapted to,A common wash-tubs of different sizes, and the plate F may have several perforations, for the purpose of adjusting it vto correspond to the quantity of clothing in the tub. The advantages of this are seen in its gentle action on the clothes, its cheapness and simplicity, and the ease` i with which it may be operated.
What `I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is`
The lever M, the spiral metal plate F, the wash-boards A and B, corrugated as shown', 4and the springs c c c, in combination with a common wash-tub, whenconstructed, arranged, and operating substantially as shown and speciiied.
GEORGE E. WADE.
