K PATENTED4 m2 DEC 1013s? @eine tetes getraut I @High ROBERT RAMSEY, OF NEW WILMINGTON, PENNSYLVANI A. Letters Patent No. 72,086, dated December 10, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE-POSTS.
@te tlgrhule aferra n in tipa trttrrs ndert zum making tnt nt tige time.
'.IO ALL WIIOM IT MAY CONCERN: il v Be it known that I, ROBERT RAMSEY, of New Wilmington, in the eountyof Lawrence, andistate of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Fence-Post; and I do hereby declare the following to be a. full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of my invention.
Figure 2 shows an end view of the same, and
Figure 3 is a top view of the same.
In this invention the bottom of thopost is supported, between two parallel sills, a short distance from the ground, the post being dove-tailed, and held by keys passing across the sills, and being adjusted high or low, and at any inclination, by making the keys larger or smaller or of different sizes.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures;
In the drawings, AA represent the sills, supported upon brackets or pedestals B B, and placed in a. posif tion parallel to each other, so asl to leave avnarrow space, C, betwceirthem. The posts P P P are stepped in the space C, and each one is confined in position by fourkeys e elle c, tw'o above and two below the sills, the keys resting against thc upper and under` surfaces of the sills, and their cross=section being of the form shown .D clearly by the end' view of them in iig. 1. At the point where these keys are designed to pass, a dove-tail gain is made-on each side of the post, one end of the gain extending above and one below the sills. The keys e e l lit accurately into thesel gains, and, 'when in place, hold the posts firmly in position, as shown in the drawings.
It is evident that each post can be set higher or lower by simply inserting'larg'er keys above or below the sills, or the posts can be adjusted at any inclination by inserting a large key above the sills on one side of the post, and a large one on the other side below the sills, the other keys being made small. This method of adjustment is shown in connection with post P, g. 1. v i
A fence thus constructed is portable, and can be adjusted to any inequality or inclination of the ground. It will be especially useful on hillsides and other uneven ground, where fences, as at prescrit constructed, are liable to fall to ruin in a short time. The posts may be mortised, as usual, or a series of gains, it', may be cnt in their sides,`and a strip of hoard nailed. to the side of the post, so as to cover them and produce the equivalent of mortiseholes, as shown in fig. I. v
-Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire te secure by Letters Patent, is
The fence-post P I PQhaving dove-tail gains at its lower end, in combination with the parallel sills A A y and the keys e e e e, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth. v
To the `above specification ofniy invention I have signed my hand, this 28th d-.i-y of September, 1867.
ROBERT RAMSEY.
