THOMAS w. wELcE AND GEORGE BSTAEEIRD, or .MEGHANICSBUEQ PENN- sYLvANIA. 4 Y
Lettere .Patent No. 80,318, dated July 28, 1868.
IMPBOVED FOUNDATION FOB. FENGBS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
- Be it known that we, THoMAs W. WELCH and GEORGE B. SrAnnrnn, of Mechanicsburg, Cumberland county, `Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Iron-Fence Foundations; and we do hereby declare' that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation4 of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in whichl Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention. l Figure 2 is an end view of the top of the same. Figure 3 is a bisectional view of the top of the same. Figure 4 is a bisectional view of the bottom of the same. A A, the lower part of the invention, is, horizontally, flat, and laterally and lengthwise, rectangular, or the middle parts of the sides thereof, for'convenience, Sto., may he concave. Upon A A are erected the parts B B, converging at angles of seventy-tive degrees, or more or less, which parte B B may be wider at the top than 'at -the bottom, or they may be of equal width above and below.
Upon the inner sides of B B, 'and at right angles thereto, are constructed the anges C 0,'whch may extend from the top to the bottom of B B, or only two-thirds of the distance.
-To the upper ends of B B, the hollow octagonal or round top D D is fastenedpby means of the bolts and screws H H, or the top, D D, may be cast in connection with the upper ends of B B, so as to make one entire casting, thereby obviating the use of the bolts and screws H H.
Upon the upper end, and near the edge of D D, are eight, or more or less, small conical or pyramidal parts, F F F F, &c., which serve as angcs to keep the post in properposition. Across the centre, and dush with the top of D D, is fastened the cross-bar E.
This `foundation is cast ofrmetal, and inserted, to within about 4four inches of the top, in the earth, and
lmade fast in the ground in the manner in which ironfence foundations are usually fastened. T-ho distance which the top of this foundation should extend above the ground depends upon the character of the surfaces',
and the circumstances of the case.
The post designed for this foundation may be cast of any of the ordinary shapes and sizes, and being 1101-' low, the lower end must be of sufiicient width to lit around `the parts or anges F F F F, &c;, while through the centre of said post, lengthwise, passes. a. bolt or rod, on the lower end of which is a hook, which catches in i the notch ofthe cross-bar E, and on ,the upper end of said rod are a screw and burr, by which the post is made fast to the foundation. The post and foundation may also be made together in one casting, thereby obviating the use of the bolt and screw in connecting them.
The part A A resting horizontallyin the earth, and the parts B B being wider y:ttthe top than at the bottom, will prevent the inclination of the 'post in the direction of the length of A A,-and the anges C C will prevent the inclination of the post in the opposite direction. .i
The parts B B, having a very small inclination, are not aiiected by the frost, which usually affects foundations of fences. y
What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is- Y The part A A, the parts BB, the parts C C, the octagonal or round top D D, the'notched cross'bar E, the conical orl pyramidal parts F F F F, Src., and the bolts and b'nrrs H H, all combined and operating in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth. r
T. W.v WELCH, GEO.`B.' STARBIRD.
