IMPROVEMENTIN FIELD-FENCE.
tite straalt referat tt tu tten netten patat mit mating pat at ttt time.
To ALL WHoM IT MAY coNcnnN: Be it known that I, J. A. GORMLY, of Bneyrus, Crawford county, and State of Ohio, have invented certain Anew and useful Improvements in Field-Fences and I d o hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and
exact description of the same, reference being had tothe annexed drawings, and to the letters of reference markedthereon, making part of this speciic'atiomin which Figure 1 is a front view.
Figures 2 and 3 are sectional views.
Figure 4 is a plan bottom view, and
Figures 5 and 6 are sectional views'.
On January 7, 1868, I. obtained a patent for an improvement in fences, the nature of the invention consisting in placing anchors in the ground, to which are attached metal standards, either by bolting them to the sides thereof, or placing them in a suitable mortise arranged nearthe centre'of the same.
Practical experience has fully attested the value of the invention, as embraced in and covered by said patent. My present invention consists simply in an improved method of securing the boards to the posts or l standards, and, while it is fully applicable to my fence aspatented, it is also equally applicable to o ther styles of fence.
attached to iron posts, and, at the same time, accomplish the result without the risk of splitting the plank. This result my invention fully attains by a simple and practical arrangement of metallic bearings or loops.
I construct'theposts with a series of holes, .the number being the same as the-number of planks that it is desired to attach. l Through each of this seriesl of holes I pass metallic loops, the free ends of the loop protruding through an opening in the centre of the plank, and also -through an opening in a short bearing-board. The ends of the loop are then turned down at right angles to the main arms of the same, 'which forms a T or I shaped bearing, as convenience may suggest.
To enable others skilledlin the artto make and use my invention, l ,will proceed to describe its construction and operation. i g i A A are anchors, Iwhich are made of any suitable material, and rmly embedded in the ground. To the anchors A vA, I firmly attach, by suitable bolts or mortises, the posts B B. C C are brace-rods, which are firmly secured to the anchors A A and posts B BL D D are planks or boards, the number of which being regulated It has long been considered a great desideratum to secure a means whereby theplanksean be firmly by desired height of fence. E are short splice or bearing-boards, which may either be inserted between the -post B and plank D, or outside of. the latter, as convenience may require. The posts B B are constructed with a series of holes, bb, through which passes a metallic loop, rl. The free ends of this loop are caused to pass through cpcningsin the centre of the boards D E. The 'ends ofthe loop d are then turned down at right angles, so as tofurnish a T- shaped bearing, ras clearly shown in iigs. 2 and 6, or an Lshaped bearing, as clearly shown in fig. 5. v.
The great advantageiof this arrangement will readily suggest itselt` to any one familiar with the construction of fences. It removes all liability of the boards splitting, it furnishes a most secure and durable fastening,l its great simplicity of construction allows of its ready application, and its cheapness recommends it beyond all other fastenings.
Having thus fully described my invention, and the operation of the same, what I claim therein as ne\v,-and4 desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is l v 1. The loop d, when the same is constructed and applied substantially as described. 2L The combination of the anchor A, post B, board D, and loop d, when the same are constructed and arranged substantially as described.
' vIn testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' J. A. GORMLY.
