IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE PENOES.
To ALL WHOM 1T MAYV coNoERN:
voi this specification, in whichcleats C, for the purpose'of locking the rails, and are kept in place bythe buttons F. G G are pins, driven into the ground through holes in the'base, D, for the purpose of holding the post in place. The rails'A and Beit known. thatvI, `W. E. RAOIBER'ArS, of North Coventry, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Portable Fen u full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference bein n the' county ofChester, and in the State of ccs; and do hereby declare that the following is g'had'to the accompanying drawings, making a part i 'Figure l is a side elevation.
Figure 2 is an' end elevation. Figure'3 shows the double notched joint.v v Lettersof like name' refer to like parts in each of the figures. A representsthe rails, made ot' ordinary lumber, I A,purpose ofshedding Water.r
B represents the post,: composed oi'tw'o uprights tied together by the cleats C, and dove-tailed into the base,
D, which is made of heavy plank. E E are pieces inserted between the rails A and cleats C are notched where they meet, as shown in. g.' 3. Where two lengths of fence are to be joined, Vthe posts are madedoufble, as shown in tig.`1', and tied together at the top by the'cleat H.
The advantages.possessedA by this fence over all others in use are: u struction; the most common kinds of lumber may be used, and the fence made by any farmer during his leisure hours. Second, vstrength and durability; when locked together and pinned t the ground, the fence is very strong, and cannot be moved by cattle, nor is it liable to be blown down by the wind, and, when not in use, can be easily housed from the weather, as it occupies but little space when taken apart. Third, convenience ,and economy; it can be used for closing in stacks,` orchards, &c., or for pasturiing parts of fields, being easily `moved as the feed becomes scarce, thereby saving much waste by the cattle, and, where timber is scarce, it. is' far more economicalthanxed fences, enabling the farmer to enclose such desire to cultivate. K
What I claimas my invention, and desire to secure Letters Patent, is
The post,l composed of theuprights B, c leats', base D, and pins G',"i`orl the purpose and substantially as herein specified.
I I also claim the stopfE and'bntton F, for thepurpose and substantially as hereindescribed.
I also claim the combination of theV rails A,'nprights` B, cleats C, base D, stops E, buttons F, pins'G, and cleat H, when constructed in the manner and used for the'.purposesubstantially as herein specified.
Injtestimony that I'claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 22d day of February, 1868.
