@In dgthult rrftmr tu in ilgest @time hm-t :mt meting pitt ti It: tame.
To ALL WHOM 1T MAY ooNoEnN.:
Be it known that I, NORMAN B. CRAWFORD, of Bennington, in the State ot' Vermont, havey invented and made a certain new and useful Improvement in vScaffolds for Roofs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said inventon,`rcfereuce being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, whorein- Figure 1 is a plan of said scaffolding, seen at right angles to the surface of an inclined roof, and
Figure is a side view of said scaffolding as applied to the surface of an inclined roof.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts in both figures.
The object of my invention is to facilitate the construction and repair of roofs that stand at an inclination or pitch upon which workmen cannot stand with safety.
My invention consistsin a board or platform that `is level, or nearly so, and provided with skids beneath it, that are fitted with windlasses to act upon the ropes that suspend thc scaffold, and. a ladder is attached'to and hangs below the platform, to give access to the same from the lowest edge of the roof.
In the drawing, a represents a roof of any kind, to which my scaffold may be'applied. b is theplatform or board, of suitable length and width, c e are triangular skids, forming supports that rest upon the roof and receive the platform b on thc upper edges, being firmly attached to said platform b, and receiving between them the winch or windlass-barrels d, actuated by cranks e, and 2 are pins inserted in holes to keep the winch from turning, except when withdrawn.' ff are ropes passing from the winch-barrels d to the .pulleys g, and thence back to the platform I1. The pulleysg are sustained by hooks, that pass over the ridge of the' roof, or are attached in any other convenient manner, so that the platform can be drawn up or lowered by turning the Winches d. Claws or pawls applied at the-back of the skids c, and'attached by hinges, are employed to steady the scaffold, and where the roof is of wood the pointed ends of these claws may be driven in.. The ladder h isv suspended from a skid under the platform '6, near the centre; it is attached by a holt, so as to be moved, and it may be formed of sections, so as to be hooked together and extended, as required from timcltf time.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 'is- The platform ZJ, sustained on the skids c c, in combination with the winch-barrels d, ropesj, pulleys g, and claws z', as and for the purposes set forth.
And in combination therewith I claimA the ladder l. applied as and for the purposes specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature, this twentieth day of September, A. D. 1867.
4 NORMAN B. CRAWFORD.
