ISAIAH M. GREEN, SE N., O F CLINTON, ILLINOIS.
I Letters Patent No. 70,549, dated November 5, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, ISAIAH M. GREEN, sen., of Clinton, in the county of De Witt, and in the State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan or top view, and I Figure 2 an elevation of my improved fence, showing two panels at the corner of a lot, with an adjacent panel forming a worm or angle with one of the two, in order to give stability.
Figure 3 is a partial plan or top view, showing, on a larger scale and more distinctly, the manner of constructing the panels.
.In the drawing, A A are the posts which are at the ends of and form part of each panel. B B are the top and bottom rails of apancl. One end of each rail is mortised into one of the posts A, and secured by a pin, a, passing through both post. and rail. The other end of each rail also passes through a mortise in the post at that end, and has a key-slot cut through it, as shown at b b, fig. 2, wherein a key, b,"sho wn also in fig. 3, can be driven, for a purpose to be hereafter described. The mortises throug lfthe posts are not perpendicular to their surfaces, but are made at such an angle as will allow the railsBB'to form an angle of sufiieient acuteness to give firmness to the structure. On the outside face of each post is channelled a groove, C, extending vertically nearly the whole distance between the top and bottom rails B. Between the rails, wires 0 c c extend from post to post, and, passing through them, have eyes turned in their ends, through which a stouter wire or rod is passed vertically, as shown at D, figs. 1 and 3. Now, if the keys I) b be driven, they will'force the posts set forth.
A A'apart until the rods Dare bedded in the grooves C, and strain the wires 0 c a tight, giving the panel strength and rigidity. After the-keys have been driven, they may be fixed by pins, as shown at d, fig. 3. The panels are connected by dowels, E, fixed in one post of a panel, and passing through a mortise in the adjacent post of the next panel, where it may be tightened by a key, e. The bottoms of the posts may be set in the ground, if deemed expedient.
The manner of turning a corner will be understood on referring to the drawings, where A A are the posts for a corner-panel, and have straight mortiscs for the rails. The fence will be continued on that side of the lot by panels constructed as hereinbefore described.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I v The groove 0 in the post A, and rod D,'passing through eyes in the ends of the wires 0. c, in combination with the keys b and their seats in the rails B, all arranged and operating. substantially as and for the purpose In testimony that I claim the above-described improvements in fences, I have hereunto signed my name this 6th day of July, 1867. I
