Be it known that 1, MICHAEL OLEARY, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York,have invented new and useful Improvements Garbage-Cans, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in garbage-receptacles, having more particular reference to the covers or removable caps therefor.
The primary object of this invention is to provide the cover with a suitable receptacle composed of open-sided sections, one being movable upon the other for permitting the entrance of the garbage and its discharge into the main receptacle without opening the mouth of the main receptacle to the atmosphere, thereby preventing the escape of any odor from the main receptacle, the movable section being of such dimensions as to entirely close the open side of the other section when in its normal position.
A further object is to provide the cover with a removable 1id,whereby access maybe readily had to the interior of the cover and surfaces of the sections for cleansing or treating the same with disinfectants.
A still further object is to provide beveled engaging faces for the joints between the lid and adjacent portion of the cover and between the cover and adjacent portion of the can for insuring perfectly tight joints at both places.
Another object is to provide the interior chamber of the cover with disinfectant-reservoirs.
To this end the invention consists in the combination, construction, and arrangement of the parts of a garbage-receptacle, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a top plan view of my improved garbage-receptacle. Fig. 2 is a plan view similar to Fig. 1, the lid of the cover being removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on line 3 3, Fig. 1, the lower portion of the main garbage-receptacle being broken away and the movable section of the cylinder being shown in its normal or closed position. Figs. 4 and 5 are sectional views similar to Fig. 3 ot the upper portion of the cover, the movable section of the garbage-receiving chamber being shown in its position to receive the garbage seen in Fig. 4 and in its position when discharging the garbage as seen in Fig. 5. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the adjacent edges of the lid and base sections of the cover, showing particularly the open-sided slot for receiving the removable section-trunnions of the receivingchamber. Fig. 7 is a fragmentary view of portion of the adjacent edges of the cover and main garbage-receptacle, showing the meansfor locking the cover to the main receptacle.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
In the drawings I have shown a garbagereceptacle 1, having a removable cover 2, in which is arranged a garbage-receiving cylinder 3. The cover 2 preferably consists of a base-section 4: and a lid 5, the base-section being provided with an inwardly-tapering annular flange 6 and depending lugs or shoulders 7.
The upper or lower end of the main garbage-receptacle l-is provided with an annular flange 8, having suitable cut-outs 9 and adjacent beveled edges 10, the cut-outs 9 being adapted to receive the lugs 7, which are also provided with beveled shoulders 11 (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 7) for engaging the beveled shoulders 10 and lower faces of the flanges 8 as the cover is rotated upon the upper end of the main receptacle, this construction forming a simple and convenient means of firmly locking the cover-base 4 to the open end of the main receptacle.
The inwardly tapering 0r beveled flange 6 preferably laps upon the inner face of the adjacent walls of the main receptacle and forms a tight fit between the cover and upper end of the main receptacle.
The upper portion of the base-section4 of the cover is preferably elongated and is provided with an upper tapering flange 13 and an annular shoulder 14, said base-section being also provided with slots 15, opening from their upper edges, for receiving suitable trunnions or pins 16, projecting from the end walls of the cylinder 3 for partially supporting said cylinder in position.
The lid-section is preferably removable from the base-section 4 and is provided with spring-arms 17, adapted to engage the annular rib 14, being also provided with beveled 5 faces 18 for engaging the tapering portions 13 and forming a tight fit between the lid and base-section. This lid 5 is provided with a circular portion having an inlet-opening 19 in its upper front wall and a slot 20 extend- IO ing rearwardly from said opening a sufficient distance to permit the movable section of the cylinder 3 to be open for discharging the gar bage therefrom. This cylindrical section 3 is preferably composed of sections 21 and 22,
15 having their adjacent sides open, the section 21 being fixed, and is provided with hookshaped straps or brackets 23 and a downwardly-inclined bottom wall 24, the strap 23 being adapted to interlock with suitable 2o loops 25, provided on the inner face of the base-section 4, and serves to additionally hold the fixed section 21 in position and to permit its removal when desired.
The trunnions 16 are preferably secured to 25 the opposite ends of this fixed section 21 and extend through the end walls of the lid 5, which end walls of the lid 5 are provided with slots similar to the slots 15 for permitting the removal of the lid independently of the cylindrical sections, it being understood that said cylindrical sections may also be removed after the removal of the lid-sections.
It may be desired in some casesto firmly secure the tru n nions to the end walls of the 5 lid for the purpose of removing the cylindrical sections thereof, this being within the scope of my invention.
The section 22 is substantially semicylindrical, is provided with end walls arranged 49 upon the trunnions 16, and forms a suitable closure for the open side of the section 21 and also for the opening 19. This section 22 is movable between the open side of the section 21 and the opening 19 and is of such di- 5 mensions as to entirely close said openings when in its normal position, as seen in Fi 3, being provided with handpiece 26 for facilitating the movement in reverse directions for first registering the opening 19 with the 50 opening in the section 21, and then by move ment in the reverse direction closing the opening 19 and connecting the interior of the cylinder with the interior of the main receptacle 1, it being understood that the slot 20 is for the purpose of permitting the handpiece 26 to be moved rearwardly when rocking the movable section 22 to the discharge position, as seen in Fig. 5. I preferably provide the cover with suitable disinfectant-reservoirs 2,? and 28, the reservoir 27 being arranged in when necessary, for refilling or for any other cause.
In the operation of my invention the cover complete is registered with the open end of the receptacle 1 and slightly turned to interlock the shoulder 11 with the flanges S. The cylindrical receptacle 3 is then placed in position and the lid is adjusted, as seen in the drawings. \Vhen desired to deposit the gar.- bage in the cylinder, the section 22 is rocked forwardly to the position seen in Fig. 4 to register the opening 19 with the opening in the section 21. This operation closes the communication with the interior of the main receptacle and the garbage is inserted through the opening 19 into the sections 21 and 22. The section 22 is then rocked rearwardly, closing the communication between the opening 19 and the interior of the cylinder before opening communication between the cylinder and the interior of the main receptacle, and as the section 22 continues to move rearwardly the garbage is discharged from the cylinder into the main receptacle. The inclined wall 2 1 facilitates this discharge, and the movable section 22 is then returned to its normal position, as seen in Fig. 3, for closing the open side of the section 21 and opening 19, and thereby preventing the escape of any odor, either from the main receptacle or from the interior of the cylinder 3.
The operation of my invention will now be readily understood upon reference to the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings, and it will be noted that some change may be made in the detail construction and arrangement of the parts of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof, the essential feature being that the removable section of the cylinder serves to normally close the inlet-opening and prevent the escape of any odor either from the interior of the receptacle or from the cylinder.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a garbage-receptacle, of a removable cover having a receiving shell composed of open sided sections their open sides facing each other, and each serving as a closure, for the opening in the other, one section being movable upon the other for the purpose described.
2. A removable cover for garbage-receptacles comprising an outer case, and an inner shell composed of open-sided sections, one being movable relatively to the other in opposite directions from its closed position and each forming a closure for the open side of the other for the purpose set forth.
3. A removable cover for garbage-receptacles comprising an outer case, and an inner shell composed of open-sided sections having their open sides facing each other, one section forminga closure for the opening in the other section and being movable in opposite directions from its closed position for receiving and discharging the garbage.
4. A removable cover for garbage-receptacles comprising an outer case having an inlet racle, ofa removable cover having a tapering flange and shoulders interlocking with the open end of the receptacle, said cover consisting of outer and inner shells, the outer shell having a movable lid provided with an inletopening, and the inner shell being composed of open-sided sections, one forming a closure for the opening in the other and for theopening in the outer case, the closure-section being movable in the opposite directions from its closed position for receiving the garbage through the opening in the outercase and for discharging the same into the receptacle.
