GARBAGE GB ASH REEEPTACLE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, lViLLIAM B. Pita- INGTON and WILLIAM A. PAULY, citizens of the United States, and residents of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage or Ash Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to improvements in garbage or ash receptacles.

The object of our invention is to provide a receptacle, adapted for mounting within a suitable opening in a wall or fence, in which to place garbage, ashes or the like prior to removal.

A further object of our invention is to provide a receptacle of such construction that the same may be easily emptied at a single operation, thereby insuring a saving of time and labor.

A further object of our invention is to provide a receptacle of such construction that the contents of the same will not pack or cake during the time in which it remains in the receptacle, and for allowing the contents, when of a semi-liquid character, to properly drain while contained within the same.

In the drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective view showing our complete invention mounted within a suitable opening in a fence. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view showing our invention closed and in normal position; the dotted lines of the figure indicating the position of the same when emptying the contents.

In the construction of our invention we provide a housing of any suitable material securely fastened in an opening formed in a partition wall or fence, having a bottom side walls a and 5, a rear wall 6, and a cover 7 mounted upon the housing by means of the hinges 8. A handle 9 is rigidly attached to the cover 7 to permit of the same being raised when filling the receptacle.

The bottom 3 of the housing is of a curved construction (as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2) in order to permit of the free movement of the movable member in and out of the housing. The lower edge of the side walls 4: and 5 are curved to conform to the bottom 3.

Attached to the front portion 10 of the housing by means of the hinges 11 is a movable member having a front wall 12., side walls 13 and a rear wall 14;. We provide a handle 15 rigidly fastened to the outer face Specification of Letters Patent.

of the front wall 12, to permit of the actuating of the said movable member and for withdrawing the same from the housing, in Rigidly mounted within the said movable member are shelves 16 adapted to hold a portion of the contents, arranged horizontally but with the outer edges 17 slightly tilted toward the front wall 12. The inner edges 18 are spaced. at sutlicient distance from the wall 12 in order to permit the liquid contained in the garbage to drain onto the bottom 3 of the housing. The lower edges 19 of the side walls 13 are in substantial alinement withv the lower edges of the side walls 4 and 5 of the housing, but with sufficient space between the edges and the bottom 3 of the housing to allow said movable member to swing freely within the same.

On a side wall we provide a spring latch which is designed to retain the movable member in position within the housing.-

The operation of our invention is as follows: The cover 7 is first raised and the garbage, ashes or the like is thrown in, a quantity of the garbage being caught by the shelves 16, the purpose of these shelves being to prevent the packing or caking of the contents while contained within the receptacle. it will be noted that the shelves 16 are inclined downwardly toward the front wall 12 of the movable member and the edges 18 are likewise s aced a suflicient distance from said wall, the purpose of such inclination and spacing being to permit of the drainage of garbage of a semi-liquid character; which overcomes the tendency of the garbage to pack or cake were the fluids not allowed to drain ofl Vhen it is desired to empty the receptacle, the same is accomplished by the single operation of withdrawing the movable member from the housing, by grasping the handle 15 and giving the member a forward and upward pull; said member will assume the position shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 2. It will be readily seen that the contents will be discharged from the receptacle when the same is held in this position.

Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to have secured to us by the grant of Letters Patent, is:

1. In a receptacle for garbage, ashes and the like, the combination with a partition wall or fence, of a housing rigidly secured to said partition; a movable member having an open top and bottom located in the housing and hingedly mounted; a plurality of partitions located in the movable member and a latch for supporting the movable lllGll'lbQI' within the housing, substantially as specified.

A device of the class described comprising a housing having side walls and rear walls; an open. top and a curved bottom; a cover hingedly mounted on the top or" said housing; a movable member having an open top and bottom located within the housing, the front wall of the movable member being hingedly secured to the housing, and a latch carried by the housing for supporting the movable member within the same substantially as specified.

3. A device of the class described comprising a housing in combination with a partition. wall or fence having an opening through which access may be had to the porter and permitted to swing Within and away from the housing; a latch carried by,

the housing and contacting with the movable member for retaining the same 1n position; a plurality of partltlon Walls carried by the movable member; a hinged cover located on the housing, and handles attached to the hinged cover and the front wall of the movable member for operating the same, substantially as specified.
