IMPRDVED FENCE-POST.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONQERN:

Be it known that we, J. E. KENDEIGH and A. H. KENDEIGH, of Amherst, in the county of Lorain, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specication, in which-'- Figure 1 is a front view of the post.

A, iig. 2, represents the post, which is constructed of sheet iron, the sides of which are struck up, forming a right-angled ilange, B, for the purpose of stiiening the sheet, and thereby add to the strength ofthe post. To the lower end ol' thc post are secured dowel-pins C, which are let into a block of stone or wood, D, and by which said pins the post is supported in a vertical position. E', fig. 1, are cars or lugs formed by punching a hole or .slot in the post,'leaving the blfrr still attached to one side of the slot., which is then divided into ears or lugs, and turned out cach way, as shown in the drawing.l It will be obvious that the number of ears will be according to the length of the hole; the length of the hole being determined by the width of the boards F used for the fence, and in which holes the ends of the boards are introduced in building the fence, and secured therein by being nailed orvpinned to the lugs. For further security a strip, G, is placed on the opposite side of the boards fron the ears, and the nails, driven through the lugs and boards, penetrate the strip, and thus afford a backing to the end of the boards. The upper end of the post is turned over at a. right angle, forming a horizontal projection, H, fig. 1,.on which a top rail or weather-board, I, isplaced and properly secured, thereby adding to the strength and finish of the structure. Square or round bars may be used in the construction of this fence, instead of boards, by punching square or round holes in the post for receiving the ends of the bars, and which are fastened by the burr in the same way as were the boards; also, by securing an upper or lower ruil to the post, pickets can be nailed on, and thus construct a. neat and durable picket-fence.

What we claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The herein-described post, when constructed of sheet iron, provided with flanges B and ears E, in combination with the boards F, in the manner substantially as set forth.
