TO WHOM I'l MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, CHARLES VAN DYEcK, of Nashville, in the State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Spring-Bed; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to theiaccompanying drawing, making part of this specification.
My invention consists in providing two additional frames, and an onterconrse of springs between the frames, to my double or reversible mattress, the same having an intermediate fram-e between the upper and lower sides thereof'.
The `accompanying drawing is a, sectional view of a. reversible bed of my invention.
A is the upper side of the bed, consisting of a. canvas-covered rectangular frame, a, with canvas stretched atliwart from side to side, and having the usual hair or cotton stuffing covered by-ticking. The under side B of the mattress has a fra-me, b, similarly constructed to the frame a. Between the upper and under sides A and B is another rectangular frame, C,ot` about the same dimensions as the other frames, which forms a foundation for springs D to a and b respectively. The upper and under sides A B are connected to each other around the outside by ticking, E, and where the said ticking comes in contact with the intermediate frame C it is secured to said frame by moulded battens F, being trnnsxed by nails between said battens and the frame. The frame C has, like a and b, canvas or ticking stretched from side to side, to give a certain lateral stability to the springs H, which run through lthe said canvas from A to B. This diaphragmatic piece H gives such stability to the springs as admits of the said springs being much lighter in proportion to their length than would be feasible without such support, so that the springs may be multiplied to a great extent, making a much easier and more desirable mattress, without increasing the weight of metal used. From side to side of the frames a and b, cords I are passed at right angles to each other, connecting the springs H together at their ends; the said-cords serving to retain the springs in their proper relative position, and also giving stability to the surface ofthe mattress.
I claim herein as new and of my inventionlhe combination ofthe three frames C a b, mattresses A B, diaphragm H', and springs D, D', and H, arranged substantially as described.
In testimony of which invention I hereuntoet my hand.
i CHARLES VAN DYECK.
