To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JACOB FRAME, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, (whose post-office address is Toledo, Ohio,) have invented new and useful Improvements in Badges or Buttons, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to badges, lapel-buttons, and the like, and contemplatesthe provision of a simple and compact badge or button which is susceptible of being expeditiously fastened in a coat or other garment and when so fastened is securely held against casual disconnection and also against turning, thus insuring its body remaining in an upright position, as is desirable.

With the foregoing in mind the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in conjunction with the annexed drawings, in which Figure l is a vertical section illustrating my improved badge as secured in abutton or other hole in the lapel of a coat. 7 Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken in the plane indicated by the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. The body A of my improved badge or button is shown in the form of an elks head, but obviously may be made in any shape and provided with any desired embellishment. It is by preference of metal and is provided at its rear side with a rigid shank B, which may be formed integral with or connected to it by solder a, as shown, or other suitable means.

The shank B is designed to rest in a buttonhole in the lapel of a coat after the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and is made fiati. a, of a greater length than thicknessand is preferably disposed horizontally, as shown, in order to prevent it from turning in the buttonhole and enable it to securely hold the body A in an upright position and against turning, as is highly desirable. apertures b, which are elongated and preferably oval in form and are arranged in a line parallel to the body for a purpose presently described.

O is the fastener of the button, which is designed to rest at the inner side of the coatlapel, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This fastener in the preferred embodiment of the invention is made of resilient wire in the form of a loop and has its bight c flattened, as shown, in order to render it stiff and strong, while its legs 0 e are provided at an intermediate point of their length with inward deflections f and below said deflections with outwardly and inwardly curved portions 9, as

shown. The leg 03 is of a slightly greaterlength than leg e in order to facilitate the placing of the fastener in engagement with the shank B, as will be presently described.

In using my improved badge or button the shank B on body A is inserted in a buttonhole in the lapel of a coat and the leg d of fastener C is inserted in one of the apertures b of the shank at the inner side of the'lapel. The said fasteneris then pressed downwardly until the end of its legeenters the other aperture b of the shank, after which it is pressed downwardly against the resiliency of the legs at 6 until the inward deflections f of said legs spring into engagement with the outer end walls of the apertures b. In this latter position the fastener G rests parallel-with and close to the body A and is securely held against casual displacement or disconnection and is enabled toefiectually prevent removal of the button-shank from the buttonhole.

While the fastener G is calculated, as stated, to efiectually prevent casual or unwarranted disconnection or removal of the badge or button, yet when it is desired to effect such disconnection or removal the same may be readily accomplished by the operator grasping the body A with one hand and then pressing upwardly with the other hand on the V against turning, which is obviously an important advantage when said body is made in the form of an elks head or other emblematical figure.

In the modified button shown in Fig. 5 the body A, which may be of any suitable shape, is provided with a pin h and a keeper 2' therefor. From this it follows that the said button may be used to advantage in attaching textile badges of all kinds to a coat-lapel; also, that it maybe advantageously employed in attaching a cuff to the inner side of a coatsleeve. When used in the latter connection, the shank of the button is passed through one of the holesof a cult and secured by the fastener C, and the pin h is passed through the lining of the coat-sleeve and placed in engagement with the keeper t'. In this way the cuff will always be securely held in the proper position with respect to the coat-sleeve, which is a desideratum.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A badge or button comprising a body, a flat shank rigid on the body and having two elongated apertures, and a resilient loopshaped fastener form ed in one piece and having legs provided at an intermediate point of their length with inward defiectionsf, and also provided with the outwardly and inwardly curved portions 9; one of the said legs being longer than the other, substantially as specified.

2. A badge or button comprising a body provided with a pin and a keeper therefor, a flat shank rigid on and disposed at right angles to the body and having two elongated apertures arranged parallel to said body, and a resilient loop-shaped fastenerformed in one piece, and having legs provided at an intermediate point of their length with inward deflections f, and also provided with the outwardly and inwardly curved portions g; one of the said legs being longer than the other, substantially as specified.
