Description

(No Model.)
W. W. BEACH.- 3111312011.. No. 292,780. V Patented Feb. 5-, 1884.
WITNESSES: v INVENTOB UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM BEACH, OF NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES V. GODDARD, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BUTTON:
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,780, dated February 5, 1884.
I Application filed June 8, 1883. (No model.)
To CLZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. BEACH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Button, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved button whichv can be used as such and also as a device for receiving the point of a pin fastened on the inside of the pants for the support of the drawers.
The invention consists in a button having a transverse aperture in the shank-that is, in the part between the head and the lower end of the shank.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of my improved button. Fig. 2 is a face View of the same, showing it used in conj unction with the pin for fastening drawers. Fig. 3 is a crosssectional elevation of a modification of the button. g
The button A is provided with an aperture, slot, recess, or opening, 13, in its shank O, which opening is adapted to receive the'point of a pin or needle, D, which is used for holding the drawers to the pants. The pin is passed through the drawers, and the point of the pin is passed into the opening 13, to protect the person from being injured by the point of the pin. If the aperture or opening is made in the shank, the button-head can be passed through a button-hole, and the button can be used in the usual manner for holding a flap of the pants, and can be also used for holding the end of the pin. Heretofore a device has been provided for receiving the end of the pin; but this device could not be used as abutton, butserved for one purpose only.
It is evident that although it is best that the aperture extend entirely through the shank of the button, it is sufficient if the opening, recess, or cavity is formed'in the surface of the shank.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- -A button whose shank is provided with a head at one end, a suitable attaching device at the other, and an intermediate opening, as andfor the purpose specified.
'WM. NV. BEACH.
