UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELMER E. MINER, OF MOUNT CARMEL, PENNSYLVANIA.
PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 684,446, dated October 15, 1901.
Application filed April 2,1901. Serial No. 54,071. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER E. MINER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Carmel, in the county of Northu mberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pipe-\Vrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pipe-wrenches,the object thereof being to provide a wrench in which the fixed jaw is provided with opposite engaging faces and cooperates with a reversible swinging jaw, whereby the wrench is adapted for engaging the bodies of pipes of different diameters and also for gripping the ends of the pipes.
With this end and other objects in view, which will. appear as the nature of the invention is more fully disclosed, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction andcombination of parts, which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing the movable jaw in longitudinal section and reversed to adapt the wrench for engaging the flange of a pipe or other object. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the wrench, showing the movable jaw adjusted so as to adapt the wrench for engaging the body of a pipe or other cylindrical object. Fig. 3 is a plan view looking down upon the inner or working face of the movable jaw.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the reference-numeral 1 represents the shank or handle-bar of the wrench, which terminates at one end in a fixed jaw 2, having opposing toothed faces 3 and 4, the upper toothed face 3 being concaved and the lower toothed face 4 convex for a purpose hereinafter described.
5 represents the movable jaw, which is bifurcated at its inner end to form the ears 8, which straddle the shank or handle-bar l and through which and the bar passes a transverse pin 9, which pivotally connects said jaw to the bar. v
The jaw 5 is provided upon opposite sides with spaced flanges 10, which are toothed to provide gripping-faces 11 and form between them a longitudinal space or recess 12, the
base wall of which is toothed to provide a gripping-face 13.
The pin 9 detachably connects the jaw 5 with the handle-bar 1, so that said jaw may be adjusted to cooperate with either of the toothed faces 3 and 4 of the fixed jaw 2.
In operation in adapting the wrench for gripping cylindrical pipes or other objects the parts are arranged in the mannershown in Fig. 2, so that the convex gripping-face 4 of the fixed jaw 2 will cooperate with the gripping-faces 11 on the side flanges of the movable jaw to grip the pipe or other object between them. The jaw 5 is adjustable toward and from thefixed jaw 2 to adapt said jaw to engage pipes of different diameters, and the construction is such that three toothed faces of the jaws exert a powerful gripping action to entirely obviate all liability of them slipping on the pipe.
To adapt the wrench to engage the smooth or flanged ends of pipes or other objects, the pivot-pin 9 is removed, the jaw 5 reversed and adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 1, and then the pin 9 is replaced to again connect said jaw with the handle-bar. When this is done, the toothed face 12 of the jaw 5 will cooperate with the concave toothed face 3 of the jaw 2, so as to adapt the wrench for gripping the ends of the pipes or other objects, as indicated in said figure, the flange appearing in solid lines.
When the pipe is gripped between the jaws, the side flanges 11 of the jaw 5 act as guards or steps to prevent the flange from moving laterally, whereby a firm gripping action of the jaws is insured.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and mode of operation of the invention will be readily understood and its ad vantages made apparent. Modifications within the scope of the invention may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A wrench comprising a shank orhandle-bar having a fixed jaw provided with opposing ping-face for grasping the smooth periphery 1o concave and convex toothed gripping-faces, of a pipe-flange inserted between the side and a swinging jaw removablyand pivotally flanges of the swinging jaw, as set forth. connected with the handle-bar to cooperate In testimony whereof I affix my signature 5 with either of said gripping-faces, said swingin presence of two witnesses.
