WRENUl-l.
SPECIFICATIOII forming part of Letters Patent No. 640,308, dated January 2, 1900.
Application filed April 22, 1899. Serial No. 714,053. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY E. K0011, a citizen of the United States, residing at I-Iartington, in the county of Cedar and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in W'renches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention is intended for general use about machinery or for special use as a pipewrench or blacksmiths tongs. Its jaws are operated by a setting rod, which may be moved in and out directly or more slowly and forcibly by its formation as a screw. It is composed of one jaw fixed on the wrenchbody and anotherjaw pivoted to the body, or of two movable jaws, both pivoted to the body, the jaws being operated by similar means in each case. A detachable auxiliary jaw is also provided for special uses.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench having one movable jaw, and Fig. 2 is an edge elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view of a movable primary jaw provided with an auxiliary jaw, and Fig. 4. is a side elevation of the upper part of a wrench having both primary jaws movable.
The letter A indicates the body of my wrench, and B indicates a fixed jaw thereon.
G is a movable jaw pivoted at c in a transverse slot E of the body A.
D is the lever of jaw O, and d is a slot in said lever, inclined upward and toward its back. a is a slot through the body A, extending lengthwise and in the wrench, with one fixed jaw inclined toward the back of that aw.
A pin e is vertically movable in the slots to and (Z just mentioned and is pivotally connected by side links 9 g to a vertically-1novable and centrally-threaded block H. This block II is engaged by the threaded rod I, which extends downward through the end of the wrench-body and is provided with a head i. The rod I is kept from vertical movement,
when operated as a screw, by a cross-pin m, which engages an annular groove 6 in the rod. Nhen the pin on is applied, the device is 0perated by turning the screw-head 2', whereby the block II is forced upward or downward, and this, through the links 9 g, opens or closes the jaws with great force. hen the pin m is withdrawn, the jaws are worked more quickly, but with less force, by pushing in and drawing back the rod I. A hole 0' in jaw C admits the arm 0 of the auxiliary jaw N, which is then held in place by a pin it. A spring 0 on the back of jaw G lifts the arm 0 and holds the jaw N normally down or open.
By this construction a gas-pipe or other 0b- 6 ject is grasped on three sides with great tonacity.
In the form shown in Fig. 4 both jaws arc movable, the lever of one jaw working in a transverse slot in the other, and are operated in the same manner as the singlejaw already described.
WVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A wrench having one fixed jaw, and one jaw pivoted to its body, a longitudinal slot in the wrench-body and a similar slot in the lever of the movable jaw, a cross-pin movable in said slots, links connecting said pin to a block and a vertically-movable rod to oper ate said block for purposes specified.
2. A wrench having a jaw fixed on its body, a jaw pivoted to said body, a longitudinal slot in said body and a similar slot in the lever of said pivoted jaw a cross-pin engaging said slots and linked to a vertically-movable and threaded block, a threaded rod to engage said block and a detachable cross-pin to engage a groove in said rod substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY E. KOCH.
